Expert 2017 Kia Forte review

Vehicle Overview

Both the 2017 Kia Forte sedan and hatchback (Forte5) get styling updates and added technology, with details on the coupe (Forte Koup) to follow, according to Kia. The Forte adds a new trim level, with the sport-oriented S trim slotting between the LX and EX. The Forte5 now is offered in three trim levels as well: LX, SX and EX.
Exterior
Styling changes give the Forte and Forte5 the same nose; this change represents only a slight tweak for the sedan, but for the hatchback it’s more drastic. The Forte5 ditches its thin version of Kia’s tiger nose grille for a larger version that now feeds directly into the reworked headlight clusters. They feature updated LED detailing and available Dynamic Bending Light technology, which angles the headlights to illuminate corners at night. This new grille, coupled with the removal of the large lower air intake, gives the Forte5 a new, smoother aesthetic that immediately brought the Volkswagen Golf to mind. The taillights have also been redesigned on both models, with LED elements optional.
Interior
The 2017 Forte and Forte5 get upgraded materials, new stitching and softer-touch surfaces (in this case, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter on S models). The most exciting changes are on the technology front, with the addition of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto to Kia’s UVO3 multimedia system. This allows for mirroring of selected smartphone apps on the Forte’s 7-inch touch-screen.
Under the Hood
The new base engine is a 2.0-liter four-cylinder, which replaces the outgoing 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine. Kia did not release power or fuel economy ratings. Two other engine options carry over: a 173-horsepower, 2.0-liter four-cylinder for Forte/Forte5 EX models or a 201-hp, turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder in the SX trim, which is exclusive to the hatchback. The SX also adds a new transmission option for 2017: a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic.
Safety
Kia has also expanded the Forte’s safety technology systems for 2017, continuing an industrywide trend that finds these features making their way down into subcompact and compact cars. A new set of driver aids is now available, including forward collision warning with autonomous emergency braking, lane change warning/assist, lane keeping assist, blind spot detection and rear cross-traffic alert.

Keep an eye out for the refreshed Forte and Forte5 to land in dealerships in the first half of 2016.

Engine had to be replaced at 46,000. I see all recalls I haven’t been given notice for. Silver trim around mirror and radio peeled off. Trunk and gas lid won’t open half the time. Too low to the ground. Paint peeling. Seals around trunk and water got in it. The 2 months Kia had it repairing engine supposed to fix it, did not!!! I could go on they won’t give rental it’s there fault

  • It's been 6 years since I bought my Forte 5 LX.

It's been 6 years since I bought my Forte 5 LX. There were times I drove it 400 + miles a week on crappy Northern California freeways for field work and the only thing replaced was the battery, tires and plugs. It currently has 120,000 miles. This one has a GDI engine but no sign of engine problems. It's the basic LX version and I'm soon putting 16" wheels on it since the 15" steel wheels have that rust look. Overall, this car has been very good to me and is great for a retired person.

  • Death Trap Waiting (imo)

Infamous for never ending engine misfires. Replace the xxxx pack at least 3 times a year. $200- $300 every time ($600 - $900 every year). I've had 3 safety recalls, and I'll tell ya, nothing has come as close to killing me as suddenly loosing the ability to accelerate across 3 lanes and powerlessly going at a turtle's speed.

  • Kia's are xxxxx###!

My 2017 forte has been nothing but headaches since the day I got it. The tranny had to be replaced before it had 25,000 miles on it. The headlights are VERY, VERY dim. The windows do not roll up properly. The motor/ fan for my a/c only works on the number 4 position, and shuts off periodically. I have replaced the fan and resistor, but it still doesn't work properly. I have 92,000 miles on this car, and if it makes it to 100,000 I will be surprised. And, the mechanics at the Kia dealerships are total MORONS! I had a 3rd cylinder misfire, and they told me I need to spend $7,000.00-$9,000.00 for a new one. The ONLY thing I needed to do was change the spark plug!! And the ignition coil!! I will never own or tell someone to buy a KIA, EVER!!

We bought our Kia Forte S new in 2017, it has 31k actual miles on it now in 2023, we absolutely enjoy the power and comfort especially the gas mileage, it's definitely one of the best choices we have ever made. 2 thumbs up 👍🏻👍🏻

  • Affordable and reliable

I bought this car cause of my 2014 Chevy Cruze giving me problems since 2019. This car I would recommend cause it was affordable and it’s smooth and reliable. I bought this car three weeks ago with very low mileage. It may be a used car but it’s new to me.

No problems other than having to replace coil packs 2x and a multitude of headlights and tail lights. Literally about two every 5-6 months. Other than that good car.

  • Will get the EX trim next time

This is the second Kia Forte I've owned, bought this one second hand with 50,000 miles on it. Love the LX, but do wish I'd paid a little more for the EX trim if only to get the extra little bit of performance which is really the only complaint I have. Nice little car than costs me less than $40 a week in gas which is fantastic with today's gas prices - my daily commute both ways is 55 miles. No reliability issues for me, the battery died on me at about 68,000 miles but it was the factory one so lasted 5 years in the Florida heat and therefore owes me nothing.
