Expert 2013 Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe review

Vehicle Overview

The Phantom Drophead Coupe is a convertible version of Rolls-Royce’s Phantom sedan. It competes in a small segment of luxurious, highly customizable convertibles.
New for 2013
The Phantom lineup gets a new front bumper design for 2013 with standard LED headlights and a new single-piece grille surround on the convertible and coupe. Technology changes include an updated navigation system with 3-D map display and an updated camera with top, rear and split-front views.
Exterior
The automaker says the Phantom sedan and convertible share no major exterior panels, though they look similar enough that Rolls-Royce aficionados will easily identify the tree this Drophead fell from. Rolls-Royce says the rear-hinged coach doors give easy access for rear passengers and add to the overall strength of the body by allowing an uninterrupted front roof pillar. Exterior features include:

  • Rear trunk gate flips down for what Rolls-Royce calls “picnic” seating for two
  • 21-inch wheels with run-flat tires
  • Variety of optional wheels
  • Available brushed stainless-steel hood, teakwood deck

Interior
The four-seat interior comes drenched in wood, leather and chrome. Rolls-Royce says it avoided bleaches, stains and lacquers in favor of natural surfaces. The seats boast flat leather surfaces designed to be wiped free of moisture. The interior design isn’t limited to the automotive realm, as inspiration is said to be taken from 1930s yachts. Interior features include:

  • Hand-stitched leather interior
  • Variety of available  wood veneers
  • Available embroidered head restraints with Rolls-Royce logo

Under the Hood
The Drophead’s 6.8-liter V-12 makes 453 horsepower and 531 pounds-feet of torque. The engine, transmission and driveshaft are positioned as low as possible to give a lower center of gravity for a sportier ride. Mechanical features include:

  • Eight-speed automatic transmission
  • Self-leveling air suspension
  • Zero to 60 mph in 5.6 seconds
  • 149 mph top speed (governed)

Safety
Safety features include:

  • Four-wheel-disc antilock brakes
  • Electronic stability system
  • Rollover protection system automatically deploys reinforced bars from behind the backseat head restraints
  • Side-impact airbags
  • Active front head restraints

  • Phantom coup

In 2009 I was invited to test the coup and drop head at Abu Dhabi rolls Royce dealer, it was an unforgettable experience. Then 3 years ago I bought a coup, amazing car, the presence, drive, sophistication is like no other car. I like the pre 2013 look, it’s more authentic. The newer ones have better multimedia but everything else is the same. Certainly a car to keep.
