Vehicle Overview
Toyota introduced its youth-focused Matrix as an early 2003 model. Described as a crossover utility vehicle, the Matrix was said to combine the functionality of a sport utility vehicle with the image and performance of a sports car. That’s no longer the case, as the 2007 model year sees the end of its high-performance XRS variant and optional all-wheel-drive system. Pontiac markets a related Vibe model.

High headroom and flexible seating positions are among the Matrix’s remaining notable attributes. Two trim levels are available: base and step-up XR. A special-edition M-Theory package attempts to restore some of the XRS’ luster with upgraded wheels, paint and brakes — though it’s more show than go, as Toyota’s high-performance 1.8-liter inline-four is gone from the picture. Toyota will limit M-Theory production to 2,500 units.

An electronic stability system and six-CD stereo are among the notable options.

Exterior
The Matrix hatchback is built on a platform similar to the one used for Toyota’s popular Corolla sedan. Measuring 171.3 inches long overall, the Matrix has a 102.4-inch wheelbase and stands 61.6 inches tall. Base wheels measure 16 inches in diameter. The M-Theory edition adds 17-inch alloy wheels, four-wheel-disc brakes, a rear spoiler and a strut tower brace under the hood for reduced body roll.

Interior
The Matrix seats up to five people. With the rear seats folded, cargo capacity measures 53.2 cubic feet. Standard equipment includes air conditioning, intermittent wipers, a CD player and a tilt steering wheel. The XR adds remote keyless entry, a sport steering wheel, driver’s seat height adjustment, and power windows, locks and mirrors.

Under the Hood
The 1.8-liter four-cylinder produces 126 horsepower. Either a four-speed automatic or five-speed manual transmission can be installed.

Safety
Side-impact and side curtain airbags are optional. Optional antilock brakes are disc/drum on base and XR models, and all-disc with the M-Theory. An electronic stability system is also optional.

Driving Impressions
The Matrix is stylish, well-built and nicely designed, but it’s somewhat noisy. It’s quiet enough when cruising, but the engine may growl and whine during acceleration. Road noise is also noticeable. The engine teamed with the automatic transmission doesn’t have much oomph, either. Automatic-transmission gear changes are noticeable but not bothersome.

Stability is good, and it’s easy to keep the Matrix on course. It steers with more precision and less wheel vibration than the Corolla, but still falls short of stimulating.

  • Found a low mileage old Matrix...and love it!

Comfy, a bit of road noise but overly reliable and the engine revs QUICK almost like a motorcycle. I have a manual trans and its actually a blast to drive what is in effect a corolla station wagon!

  • Good car

Received car from estate settlement. Minor issues easily corrected and have put almost 20,000 miles on it with no significant issues. Scheduled maintenance doesn’t reveal any hidden problems.

  • I loved My Little Matrix, I bought it back!

Got this car last spring and loved it! Great on gas and hoped it would last me for a long time. It had 230,000 km on it and then all of a sudden the tranny went on it. Mine is a manual transmission and I thought it was the clutch at first. So I traded it in for a Nissan Altima, which was a nightmare. I wanted my baby back so bad. So a few months later, I saw the guy I traded it in to had it up for sale for more than I paid for it! I messaged him and told him I wanted to trade back. He did, thankfully and I couldn't be more happy to be reunited with the little car! Fun little car to drive. I had no other problem ever other than the tranny, which I hear is common for that year. Hope I have no more problems with the tranny though.

  • Dependable and very practical. Gets the job done.

This is a practical car that drives and handles well. Much more fun than the Corolla on which it was based. A great capability is that the back seats when down provide a huge, completely flat cargo area behind the front seats. This area is covered in a very durable plastic. It has cargo tie-downs. You can even extend this area further by putting down the front passenger seat, which also has a durable back. This is why the car was sold as a CUV - compact utility vehicle.

  • extremely reliable car, lots of space

This car is in great condition. Good mileage, usually between 30-33 mpg. It's a hatchback - you can fold down back seats for a lot of storage space. Great for road trips! Easy to drive.

  • Incredibly reliable car!

I owned the Matrix for 22 years and it was a amazing vehicle. Reliable, dependable and GREAT on fuel economy. If you want a sporty car without the huge insurance premiums, this little zippy car is the one for you! It may only have a 4 cylinder, but that never stopped it from keeping up with the big dogs on the road!

  • Versatile and zippy!

The Matrix is reliable and roomy. I can comfortably carry 3 passengers, and often put the back seats down to haul my bike, teee branches?whatever! I like to get where I?m going, and the car definitely has some zip and spunk! I really like sitting up higher (not as high as an SUV but higher than a regular car). The great thing is that it?s better on gas than an SUV!
