When checking out compact pickup trucks, give the Comanche from ChryslerCorp.`s Jeep/Eagle division a few moments of your time.

We test drove the Comanche Eliminator, rather nifty name for a truck with above average performance from its 4-liter, 177-h.p., fuel-injected, 6-cylinder engine teamed with a no-hangup 5-speed manual as standard. A 4-speed automatic is an option at $582. The 4-liter exerts little efforthauling cargo or passengers.

The Eliminator package is offered only on the shortbed two-wheel-driveComanche. It will be added to the four-wheel-drive Comanche for the `90 model year. Body colored grille, color-keyed fender flares and air dam, black front and rear bumpers, aluminum wheels and Eagle GT+4 steel-belted radial tires areincluded in the package.

Base price for the two-wheel-drive Comanche is $7,757. The Eliminatorpackage adds $2,783.
