1995 Chevrolet Suburban review
I own a rare 1995 Chevrolet Suburban K1500 Starcraft conversion. Burgundy with gray and white stripes. Gray leather interior. Has unique wood trim around dash / door panels and captain chairs with Starcraft embroidery. The most comfortable vehicle I’ve ever driven in. It’s luxury on wheels and was top of the line back in its day. Almost 400K on it, completely stock drivetrain, all matching numbers. I purchased off the original owner two years ago and have put on 100,000 kms since then. I know this truck as good as I know myself. I was an owner operator courier driver and this was the truck I used to make my rounds. I could always count on this truck to get me from A to B and all the way to Z for that matter. Extremely reliable and has never left me stranded. I’ve put this truck through everything and it just keeps on going. It has the original legendary 5.7L TBI V8 engine and 4L60E automatic transmission. Both function like new and have been serviced regularly at the appropriate intervals. The 350 still packs a real punch and doesn’t burn a drop of oil. Trans shifts flawlessly through all 4 gears and reverse. It has mostly highway kms on its tried and true drivetrain. Does really well on road trips. It’s a long haul truck and has been on plenty ‘several-thousand-km’ round trips without a single hiccup. I would trust it anywhere and take it to the ends of the earth (if I could afford the gas LMAO). Actually gets reasonable gas mileage for a vehicle of this size/weight/age though. I’ve gotten anywhere between 16 and as high as 23 MPG. On average you can expect 18-20 MPG light footed highway driving. Performs better through snow in 2WD than a pickup truck does in 4x4 due to the extra weight in the back from the glass. Truck has high mileage, so its reliability has been put to the test. Still has lots of life left. It has been the best most dependable, low maintenance, worry-free vehicle I’ve ever owned. Repairs have been minimal and mostly preventative maintenance, nothing you wouldn’t expect for a 28 yr old vehicle. I’ve replaced: - Leaky water pump - Front shocks - Windshield - Battery - Brakes - Full tuneup (plugs/wires, distributor cap & rotor) - Alternator (worn bearings, nothing electrical) - 4x4 actuator and seal between t-case and front diff. All at 300K + and over a course of 2 years. Each repair cost less than $300 and truck was only down for a few hours. None of these repairs came as a surprise or hindered the overall performance. The oil cooler lines and rear axle seals sweat a bit also, as they do on all of these trucks. The drivers interior door handle is broken as well, probably the most common issue you’ll run into. Cheap fix just never bothered me enough as it’s only a minor inconvenience. Has a blown speaker which I will be fixing soon. Some of the power options work when they want to, and the A/C is non functional but that’s what the windows are for (except the passenger side window doesn’t roll down lol). These quirks just give it more character! Overall it’s a solid workhorse, built LIKE A ROCK!!!!! The iconic GMT400 platform is the most ruggedly built truck to ever roll off the line. Truly the heartbeat of America. They just don’t make them like they used to. Bowtie ‘til I die!
