(upbeat techno music) Hi, I'm Kelsey Mays for cars.com and we're here at the 2008 Detroit Auto Show with the BMW X six. And just when you thought you'd finally gotten your mind around what a crossover is, BMW went and dropped one of these.
Is it a sports car? Is it an SUV? Is it one of those things that turns into a boat when you put it in a lake? No, it's actually what BMW calls a sports activity coop. And the last time we checked coops are supposed to have two doors. The X six has long flowing lines from stem to stern. It's also got a high-tech all wheel drive system and under the hood there's an available 400 horsepower twin turbo v8. Now inside the X six seats four true to form, it's kind of a sports car among SUV's. Pop the uh trunk here. This is a trunk it's reasonably flat, but notice that it's got a pretty high lift over. It's up near my hip. Usually a lot of other SUV's have it down here. You'll also notice there's no scuff plate along the bumper. So you might scratch some things up. If you're taking in putting out suitcases a lot, one feature we do like is this top here, just folds right here. Even take a few things on top if need be. You don't need to latch it or anything like that. Now that's what it's pretty familiar for BMW fans. It's got actually leather coverings over a lot of the surfaces, including all the way down to the lower center controls here. That's pretty nice and upscale. Again utility isn't really the name of the game here. So you look at things like the glove compartment and the center console. They're both pretty small and insubstantial. They're knee pads on either side of the center console. That's kind of a nice feature for long haul comfort, but the dominant thing here you'll notice is a visibility. You look back, the rear window is very low and the roof pillars are enormous. Obviously we haven't driven this, but it's probably going to make for a monster blind spot. I'll tell the X six certainly puts form before function. It should be engaging to drive if it lives up to BMWs handling reputations, but as an SUV, well, it really works best if it's the u in utility that matters most. <v Narrator>For additional information on this car or any other go to cars.com and our blog Kicking Tires.
