Sheesh! Check this thing out. It's the all-new 2026 Lexus ES, and well, as you can tell, it ain't your granddaddy's ES, no, no. This is a huge departure from, well, any prior Lexus, and it is a big signal of things to come for the luxury brand.
Let's get cracking. As wild as that exterior is, it's the ES powertrains that have our attention, as all ESs are now either hybrid or fully electric. We'll start with the hybrid. Like elsewhere in the Toyota and Lexus lineup, power comes from a hybridized, naturally aspirated 2.5-liter four cylinder, rated to 244 combined horsepower to either the front or all wheels. Meanwhile, the electric ES offers either single or dual motor setups with 221 horsepower and 338 horsepower, respectively. The official EPA-rated fuel economy isn't available yet, nor are the full details of the electric range, but Lexus confirmed the front-wheel drive electric ES is rated to around 300 miles of range, so not bad. But wait till you check out the interior. This thing is crazy, huh? I hesitate to call it handsome, but it is a smart, intriguing, and markedly upscale place to be, provided that you prefer modernism over classical aesthetics. In this pre-production example, materials and presentation are impressive, particularly regarding the 3D-printed bamboo-like trim material and soft touch surfaces on the steering wheel and armrests. Like the exterior design, this cockpit is a big departure from what we've come to know and expect from the brand. If you crave an analog experience, stay away from the new ES. Much of the controls are handled via the center 14-inch touch infotainment screen with support from the touch capacitive dash controls and a lone volume scroll knob. If the goal was to make a statement and to get people talking about the brand, I gotta say, I think the 2026 Lexus ES is job well done. Now, there's a lot that we don't know, including pricing, official EPA fuel economy and range, on-sale date, but when we do learn more about that, you can read all about it at cars.com/news.
