Vehicles Affected: Approximately 181,000 model-year 2017-18 Ram 1500, 2500 and 3500 pickup trucks; model-year 2017-18 Ram 3500, 4500 and 5500 chassis cabs; and model-year 2016-17 Ram 3500 chassis cabs with a gross vehicle weight rating of less than 10,000 pounds, all equipped with a steering-column gear shifter
The Problem: Pushing the brake pedal for prolonged periods while the truck is running and in Park can cause the brake transmission shift interlock pin to overheat and stick in the open position. With the pin in the open position, the transmission can shift out of Park into any gear without pushing the brake pedal or having the key in the ignition, increasing the risk of a rollaway that may result in a crash or injury.
Ram recommends setting the parking brake to prevent inadvertent movement. The automaker said it is unaware of any injuries or accidents related to the issue.
The Fix: Dealers will update the body control module software and test the BTSI operation, replacing the solenoid if necessary; all repairs will be done for free.
