- Which should you buy, 2017 or 2017.5? 2017.5, as additional standard safety features offset price increases
The Rogue compact crossover has become Nissan's best-selling model and the fifth best-selling vehicle in the U.S., trailing only the Toyota RAV4 in SUV sales through August. Nissan has turned up the heat on competitors with the addition of standard safety features on 2017.5 models.
Midyear upgrades to the Rogue include making forward emergency braking with pedestrian detection, blind spot warning and rear cross-traffic alert standard on all models. Previously, none of those features was available on base S models, and forward emergency braking was available only in an option package on SL models.
With those features now standard, base prices on the S grade climb by $595, and on the SV and SL by $495 (price differences include destination). That applies to the gas-only models with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, and to the gas-electric SV and SL Hybrid models with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder.
The smaller Rogue Sport, which went on sale in May as a 2017 model and comes with a gas 2.0-liter four-cylinder, is not affected by the midyear changes. (Nissan has not said when 2018 models of the Rogue or Rogue Sport will be available.)
Also new for 2017.5 is a $990 Midnight Edition package for Rogue SV models with black 17-inch alloy wheels and black exterior trim.
The Rogue has a lot going for it in the crowded, competitive compact SUV market, including a broad range that comprises hybrids and the less expensive Sport models, the availability of three-row/seven-passenger seating and a choice of front- or all-wheel drive on all models. That's why Cars.com editors named it Family Car of the Year for both 2016 and 2017.
The addition of standard forward emergency braking, blind spot warning and rear cross-traffic alert enhance the Rogue's appeal and value.
