Cadillac has been a latecomer to the luxury crossover party, but now it’s rushing to catch up with a slew of introductions this year, including the XT4, as well as its latest new vehicle, the all-new-for-2020 XT6.

The XT6 is Cadillac’s second three-row SUV — the other being the Escalade, which soaks up a lot of the name recognition and cultural attention. But the only real similarity between the two is that they have three rows: The Escalade rides on a truck-based platform, while the XT6 goes for more modern, unibody (read: car-based) underpinnings; the latter seats six or seven passengers, depending on the choice of a second-row bench or captain’s chairs.

Our time with the XT6 thus far has revealed it to be a competent, if unexciting, addition to the Cadillac lineup. There’s only one powertrain option, a 3.6-liter V-6 mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission, which provides a solid driving experience. The same could be said for the interior, which has enough luxury to put the XT6 above the premium options (like the Acura MDX) but not quite enough to put it up against some of the newer competitors like the Lincoln Aviator or the Volvo XC90, the latter of which gets its own set of updates for 2020.

One more thing worth pointing out about the XT6: In stark contrast to other GM vehicles we’ve tested, it actually comes with a decent list of standard safety features. The XT6’s standards include front and rear parking sensors, low-speed (less than 50 mph) automatic forward emergency braking, lane keep assist, blind spot warnings and automatic high beams.
