Ahhh, the 2020 Jeep Wrangler. Every time I read the name or hear it spoken aloud, I give a little sigh because it has a special place in my heart. In an automotive world where vehicles seem to be getting more and more similar as time goes on and formulas get copied, the Wrangler stands alone: an unapologetic off-road juggernaut with remarkable out-of-the-box capability that went uncompromised in its 2018 redesign.
That overhaul introduced the JL generation of the Wrangler, which kept the SUV’s renegade nature and capability alive, while making it a much better vehicle to live with in day-to-day life. It’s easier to pop off the roof and doors, and there’s a real multimedia system and a backup camera since you still can’t see anything that’s less than 3 feet tall out of the thing.
For 2020, the big addition to the Wrangler lineup is a new engine, a 3.0-liter V-6 turbo-diesel that makes 260 horsepower and a whopping 442 pounds-feet of torque. It also gives the Wrangler a big boost in fuel economy, returning an EPA-estimated 25 mpg combined that beats the V-6 gas engine’s 20 mpg by 25%. Bear in mind that the diesel is only available on four-door Wrangler Unlimited models — for now. Keep an eye out for the diesel to eventually spread out more, including to the Wrangler-based Gladiator pickup truck, where it would be a natural fit.
We love the Wrangler here — it’s made our Most Fun-to-Drive Car of the Year lists in both 2019 and 2020 with good reason. It’s simply a joy to drive in a different way than the performance cars that round out our roster of contenders each year. Don’t believe me? Get behind the wheel. There’s a reason “It’s a Jeep thing” is one of the truer automotive idioms that gets thrown around.
If I’ve convinced you … or maybe you were even considering buying a Wrangler already before reading this, here’s everything you need to know about the 2020 Jeep Wrangler:
