Hyundai has released some shadowy teaser renderings and a video of its redesigned 2021 Elantra — and, as with the sleek new 2020 Sonata, the company seems bent on getting its design mojo back for its cars. A full reveal and details of what appears to be a crisply creased and sharp-elbowed new look is coming March 17, with an event to be streamed live from a historic movie studio in West Hollywood, California.

The most striking feature in the rendering is the deep and sharp side sculpting — a collision of lines and angles at a point in the front door. Hyundai designers call the theme “Parametric Dynamics.” (I suspect that the production folks tasked with getting those door panels and fenders right have a more colorful name for it.) The sleek profile and a roofline stretched to the trunk-lid lip evoke the new Sonata. The front and rear are still to be revealed, but expect a signature big Hyundai grille up front and what appears to be Sonata-like sculpting and taillights out back. Hyundai says the car is “longer, lower and wider” than the current Elantra.

The interior drawing shows an asymmetrical dashboard with color and trim that wraps cockpit-style around the driver. Hyundai calls the layout an “Immersive Cocoon” for the person behind the wheel. Overall, it’s a stylish, minimalist look for a compact sedan.

More From Cars.com:

The dash includes what appears to be a widescreen display, and a configurable instrument cluster display may be an option given that Hyundai calls it a “large interface consisting of two harmoniously integrated displays.” A lever shifter rather than a dial or buttons is shown along with a variation on a two-spoke steering wheel. Conspicuously absent, however, are any knobs or switches for common media or climate functions — so let’s hope that’s just for artistic effect in the design rendering and not the real deal.
