2024 Subaru WRX TR: A More Focused Rex

That another STI version is still perhaps years away doesn’t mean Subaru is going to leave its rally-bred WRX alone. At Saturday’s Subiefest Florida event, a huge Subaru fan gathering at Daytona International Speedway, Subaru is introducing the 2024 WRX TR — a tightened, stiffened sedan focused on track work.

The WRX TR features stiffer springs and revised dampers that cinch down body movement for tidier handling, while a retuned steering rack and standard Bridgestone Potenza S007 rubber on unique 19-inch wheels sharpen response. Brembo brakes clamp the enlarged rotors with six-piston calipers in front and two-piston pinchers in the rear.

The TR also gets standard Recaro sport seats upholstered in black and gray synthetic suede with red stitching. It ditches the moonroof that’s standard on the WRX Premium and Limited for weight savings and a lower center of gravity, according to Subaru. If that sounds like a little bit of marketing spin on a cost-cutting measure, the third reason Subaru cites for ditching the glass ceiling is inarguable: “additional headroom for helmeted drivers.” Poking a hole in the roof of the WRX reduces headroom by an inch, and that can be a critical inch for a taller driver wearing a helmet.
Additionally, Subaru is expanding the availability of its EyeSight driver-assist system to manual-transmission WRXs starting with the 2024 model year. The tech includes forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning and adaptive cruise control.
What the TR doesn’t get is more power. It’s motivated by the same turbocharged 2.4-liter flat-four-cylinder engine as other WRXs, with 271 horsepower and 258 pounds-feet of torque, plus a six-speed manual transmission.
The 2024 Subaru WRX TR will go on sale early in 2024; pricing will be announced closer to launch.
