Mazda’s first major recall since 2021 affects a crucial safety component for two vehicles in its lineup, one erstwhile. More than 227,000 Mazda3s and CX-3s are under recall for an improperly displaying backup camera.

Affected vehicles include model-year 2014-18 Mazda3 hatchbacks and model-year 2016-21 CX-3 SUVs. The backup camera image may not display properly, instead showing a flickering or distorted image that can reduce the driver’s rear view, increasing the risk of a crash or injury.

To fix the issue, dealers will inspect and replace the backup camera, as necessary. They’ll also install a wiring harness fastening seal. Both repairs will be done for free, and Mazda will begin notifying owners Sept. 12; in the meantime, owners can call the automaker at 800-222-5500, option 6 (Mazda’s number for this recall is 6023G), the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236, or visit its website to check your vehicle identification number and learn more.
