Stellantis’ first major recall of the new year involves more than 63,000 examples of its Jeep Cherokee SUV. An issue involving the vehicles’ power transfer unit may result in a loss of drive power or the Park function.
Affected vehicles include model-year 2017-19 Cherokees. There may be an input shaft snap ring in the PTU of these vehicles that may not be fully set in place, allowing for movement of the input shaft and leading to premature wear of the range shift sleeve or damage to the spline or range fork. This defect can cause an unexpected loss of drive power or loss of the Park function when the vehicle is not in motion; both scenarios increase the risk of a crash and injury.
At this time, the remedy is still under development. Jeep parent Stellantis will notify owners Feb. 13, but those with further questions can contact the automaker at 800-853-1403 (Stellantis’ number for this recall is 01C), the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236, or visit its website to check their vehicle identification number and learn more.
