We recently drove the 2019 BMW M850i coupe and thoroughly enjoyed it. In fact, Cars.com reviewer Brian Wong called it one of “my favorite vehicles that I’ve tested over the past couple years.” But if two doors aren’t enough for your luxury grand tourer needs, BMW has an answer: the upcoming 8 Series Gran Coupe. We’re no polyglots, but “Gran Coupe” appears to translate to “four-door sedan” in some French dialect.
Why put four doors on an 8 Series, you ask? Why not? Pretty much every modern BMW coupe has had or will have a Gran Coupe version, so why would the 8 Series be any different? BMW promises the 8 Series Gran Coupe will have “impressive space for rear passengers” and a longer wheelbase than the coupe.
I asked Wong about the M850i’s backseat and he said that his 5-foot, 2-inch-tall mom was able to fit with the front seat moved up a little, but that he — at 5-foot-11 — wouldn’t have fit at all. That’s a very low bar for the Gran Coupe to jump over to improve backseat passenger comfort.
The 8 Series Gran Coupe will make its full debut in Munich on June 25 and go on sale in September.
