Winner: 2023 Genesis G90

The G90 full-size luxury sedan has served as Genesis’ flagship since both the car and the division were launched in 2017 (Genesis is the luxury arm of Hyundai). The G90 has been redesigned for 2023, gaining new powertrains, fresh technology, dramatic yet elegant styling and significantly higher prices than its predecessor.

Flagship vehicles are traditionally technological tours de force for their respective makers, but some class stalwarts have focused so much on gee-whiz tech features that they can be a little overwhelming (looking in your direction, Mercedes-Benz S-Class). Elaborate touchscreen interfaces and touch-sensitive controls might look dazzling, but they can be a headache to use every day. To its credit, the G90 keeps things relatively simple with a straightforward control interface and clear digital menus.

That’s not to say the G90 skimps on features. The regally finished cabin is offered with plenty of high-end touches, such as heated, ventilated and massaging seats; a touchscreen control interface for the rear passengers; power-closing doors; a cabin fragrance diffuser; and even a Mood Curator system that pairs various ambient elements such as cabin lighting, music and fragrance into preset programs.

Genesis also remembered that the primary mission of a large luxury sedan is to coddle occupants with world-class quietness and comfort — not all buyers want sports sedan agility, especially if ride quality suffers as a result. Though it handles decently for an automobile its size (thanks in part to its available air suspension and rear-wheel steering system), the G90 favors cushiness over cornering prowess.

It does move along just fine, however; the base 3.5T AWD is powered by a 375-horsepower, twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V-6. The step-up 3.5T e-Supercharger AWD model uses the same basic engine but adds a 48-volt electric supercharger for a total output of 409 hp.

The icing on the cake is the G90’s knockout exterior styling — it’s both sensuous and stately, highlighted by impeccable details like a bold version of Genesis’s signature diamond-shield grille flanked by thin-strip headlights with micro-optic lenses.

This car is no longer the relative bargain it once was — in fact, it’s the first Genesis to crack the $100,000 barrier — but we think the new G90 is worth the money. In terms of all-around luxury presence, it stands tall against its class rivals while still undercutting them on price.

2023 Land Rover Range Rover: Finalist

• Base powertrain: 395-hp, turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six-cylinder; eight-speed automatic transmission; AWD

A redesigned Range Rover launched as a mid-2022 model with a fresh take on the nameplate’s signature exterior styling, and it impressed us in the same ways the new G90 did. Land Rover prioritized an opulent interior and cushy ride quality, and it kept the elaborate control interfaces in check. Though they don’t break new ground, the Range Rover’s tech features are quick and easy to figure out.

And even though few Range Rover owners truly exercise their vehicles’ formidable off-road capabilities, the new model offers the full complement of Land Rover technologies, including off-road camera systems, a standard height-adjustable air suspension and six different off-road driving modes that make traversing rough terrain a breeze.

There’s no shortage of oomph under the hood, either. The 2023 Range Rover offers a choice of a 395-hp, turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder or a 523-hp, twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8. New for 2023, a plug-in hybrid version has a combined output of 434 hp and an estimated electric driving range of 48 miles.

Cap it off with a dazzling, spacious cabin with an available third row that can accommodate adults and you’ve got one of our favorite new luxury vehicles.

2023 Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo: Finalist

• Price range: $99,150-$191,450
• Estimated electric driving range: 222-235 miles
• Base powertrain: Dual electric motors for 375 hp, up to 469 hp with launch control; AWD

A well-rounded nature is one of the things we look for in the luxury class, and the Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo is very well-rounded. It’s a sports car! It’s a luxury car! It’s an electric vehicle! It’s a hatchback-wagon! It’s a light off-roader! It can be a supercar that rockets from 0-60 mph in under 3 seconds!

The Taycan Cross Turismo is a wagonlike variant of Porsche’s Taycan electric sedan. The elongated roof of the hatchback body style provides improved rear-seat headroom over the sedan, as well as respectable cargo-hauling space for a sporty vehicle. AWD is standard, and maximum output ranges from 469-750 hp, trim depending, though note that maximum power ratings only come while using launch control. Even with the 750-hp Turbo S, though, the Taycan Cross Turismo maintains ride quality that’s supple enough for road-trip comfort while also delivering the athletic driving character expected of a Porsche.

Those road trips probably won’t be extra-long, however. The Cross Turismo’s EPA-rated driving ranges are all less than 240 miles, trailing most rival EVs. And even among luxury brands, Porsche has never been known for bargain pricing — you’ll have to fork over six figures for all but the base trim, and the top-performance Turbo S easily crests the $200,000 mark with options. Still, there aren’t many vehicles on the market that check as many boxes as the Taycan Cross Turismo does.
