Ford’s all-electric 2021 Mustang Mach-E isn’t even out yet, but the automaker is already letting shoppers know that when its software needs an update, it can be done from the comfort of the garage.

The automaker announced that nearly all Mustang Mach-E computer modules can be updated wirelessly via over-the-updates. That includes updates to the car’s next-generation Sync 4 multimedia system, which uses a giant 15.5-inch dashboard touchscreen that controls the majority of the car’s functions.

Owners will receive notifications when software updates are available and then can apply them using either Wi-Fi or cellular connections, depending on the update. Ford said it expects to deliver the first updates within six months after the initial Mustang Mach-E vehicles are delivered.

At Your Convenience

Some of the secure updates can be done unobtrusively in the background or be completed in less than two minutes. Some updates will also launch automatically once the vehicle starts. For more complex updates that can’t be done in the background while the vehicle is in use, owners will be able to select a convenient time, like the middle of the night, for the update to run while their Mach-E is parked.

Over-the-air updates aren’t a new concept, but only a couple of automakers are currently on board. Tesla was one of the first to make the technology mainstream across its lineup; BMW is also rolling out the capability on several vehicles.

More Than Mach-E

The Mach-E isn’t the only Ford to start using over-the-air software updates. Ford said that in 2020, it will begin equipping most redesigned vehicles with advanced over-the-air update capability for quick and easy wireless upgrades that should enhance the vehicle’s operations and reduce dealer visits.

The 2021 Mustang Mach-E is expected to go on sale in late 2020, but the First Edition is already sold out.
