CARS.COM — As Ford continues a lineup-wide rollout of its latest-generation multimedia system, Sync 3, the automaker is also synchronizing the availability of Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Ford announced today that almost all 2017 models will be compatible with either smartphone integration system, offering owners greater convenience in accessing their mobile devices’ apps and functions.
“Ford, using its platform-centric approach — creating a technology for its lineup versus going vehicle by vehicle — has been able to swiftly roll out Sync 3 plus Apple CarPlay and Android Auto,” the automaker said in a statement. “And future, over-the-air updates via Wi-Fi will help ensure it keeps up with the latest technology.”
Android Auto is compatible with all devices with Android 5.0 or higher, and CarPlay with iPhone 5 or later models. Apps including Spotify, Pandora, FordPass, AccuWeather and AAA member services have been added through Sync AppLink, Ford noted.
Ford explained that releasing Sync 3 with Android Auto and CarPlay compatibility across its entire model-year lineup eliminates the “guesswork” for car shoppers that rolling out the function piecemeal requires.
Making things easier for customers is a wise move for Ford, which for years was dragged down in the multimedia arena by the glitchy, error-plagued MyFord Touch system. Sync 3 debuted on the 2016 Escape and has received accolades from our reviewers, who found its menu layout intuitive, controls straightforward, response time quicker, voice recognition improved and features more smartphone-friendly.
