Hot on the heels of the beautiful Genesis X all-electric concept comes the Electrified G80 sedan, the first all-electric production car from Hyundai’s luxury arm. The Electrified G80, unveiled at Auto Shanghai 2021 in China, shares an almost identical outward appearance to the internal-combustion G80, but it’s a different animal under the skin.

Just how different isn’t entirely clear, as only some details about its electric powertrain have been revealed. Here’s what we know right now:

Longish Range, Maybe?

Genesis has only provided two range estimates as of now: a New European Drive Cycle estimate and one “[b]ased on the Korean EV certification system.” According to NEDC testing, the Electrified G80 should have around 310 miles of maximum range, while the official company estimate based on Korean testing is over 265 miles.

Genesis says the Electrified G80 is coming to North America, so we should have an EPA range estimate at some point later in the year. Then we’ll know if Genesis’ first EV is closer to Tesla Model S or Polestar 2 range estimates.

Quick but Not Crazy Quick

With its standard all-wheel drive, Genesis estimates that the Electrified G80 can sprint from 0-60 mph in 4.9 seconds when in Sport mode; that’s plenty fast, but we’ve seen wilder figures from other EVs. The Electrified G80 is also capable of operating as a rear-wheel-drive car to improve efficiency.

Charging Stats

Charging should also be relatively quick, with 350-kilowatt rapid charging capable of taking the battery from 10% to 80% charge in an estimated 22 minutes.

Owners will also be able to discharge the battery without driving thanks to the Electrified G80’s vehicle-to-load system that allows it to act as a 3.6-kW generator. For comparison, our long-term Best of 2021-winning Ford F-150 Hybrid has an optional 7.2-kW generator, and the F-150 can instead be equipped with either a 2.0- (most gas-engine models) or 2.4-kW (standard on hybrid F-150s) generator.

Eco-Friendlier Luxury

As Genesis is a luxury brand, the Electrified G80 will have tech for creating a quiet and comfortable ride. First is the brand’s Active Noise Control-Road, which debuted on the GV80 SUV. It’s capable of analyzing road noise and mitigating it by creating opposing soundwaves.

The Electrified G80 will also have Genesis’ Electronic Control Suspension with Road Preview, an adaptive suspension system that uses the front camera system to detect upcoming road imperfections and bumps and then adjusts the suspension settings to reduce bumpiness.

In the name of a more environmentally friendly vehicle, Genesis says the luxurious interior materials in the Electrified G80 will be made with natural or recycled materials, including leather upholstery with natural dyes, trim made from recycled wood and fabrics made from recycled plastics.

Pricing and Release Date

We don’t have pricing or a release date yet for the Electrified G80, but Genesis says more specs and information about its availability in the U.S. are coming later this year.
