Key Points

  • Pricing for the 2026 Volvo XC40 starts at $41,195 (all prices include $1,295 destination charge).
  • New front-wheel-drive powertrain lowers base price
  • All-wheel drive available on every trim level

Volvo’s smallest and most affordable gas-powered SUV, the XC40, gets a new base powertrain for the 2026 model year. Dubbed B4 by Volvo, the new engine is a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder just like the now-optional B5, but it makes 53 fewer horsepower and 37 fewer pounds-feet of torque. There’s also a new Black Edition trim atop the lineup, and adaptive cruise control and front parking sensors are newly standard.

Trim Levels and Safety Features

The entry-level Core trim features keyless entry and start, 18-inch alloy wheels and a power liftgate. Inside are cloth upholstery, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, heated front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, ambient lighting, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 9-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, eight-speaker audio and wireless phone charging. Standard safety tech on the 2026 XC40 includes front and rear parking sensors, adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitors, rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure steering assist and road-sign recognition.

To the Core’s equipment, the Plus trim level adds a panoramic moonroof, 19-inch wheels, side parking sensors and a 360-degree camera system. Its interior is upgraded with synthetic leather and suede upholstery, a power front-passenger seat and manual bottom-cushion extensions for both front seats.

The Ultra gains 20-inch wheels, upgraded LED headlights and a 13-speaker Harman Kardon sound system. Based on the Ultra, the Black Edition derives its name from black 20-inch wheels and exterior trim and a black roof.

Powertrain Specs and MPG

Volvo’s powertrain nomenclature can be somewhat confusing. Both the new B4 base engine and the newly optional B5 are turbo 2.0-liter four-cylinders — the larger number merely denotes more power. The B4 makes 194 hp and 221 pounds-feet of torque, while the B5 generates 247 hp and 258 pounds-feet. Both engines are teamed with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The B4 is exclusively available with FWD, and the B5 includes AWD. The B5 costs an additional $2,700 on every trim level except the Black Edition, where it’s standard.

The 2026 XC40 B4 returns an EPA-rated 25/32/27 mpg city/highway/combined; the B5 is rated at 23/30/26 mpg. Volvo claims the B4 needs 8.1 seconds to accelerate from 0-60 mph, while the B5 can get there in just 6.1 seconds.
