What Car Shoppers Need to Know

  • The 2027 Mazda CX-5 is a small SUV that competes with the likes of the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V.
  • A four-cylinder with 187 horsepower is the only available engine, and all-wheel drive is standard.
  • Pricing starts at $31,585 (including destination fee).

Compact SUVs are the most popular vehicles in the country. To draw as many shoppers as possible into its showrooms, Mazda sells two vehicles in this white-hot class: the CX-5 and the CX-50. Mazda treats the CX-50 as something of a test bed, pitching it toward the adventurous, outdoorsy crowd and offering turbocharged and hybrid powertrains. The CX-5, on the other hand, is just a highly appealing SUV with attractive styling, a no-fuss engine, standard AWD and a steadily increasing number of luxury features as you climb the trim-level ladder.

What’s Changed for 2027?

Some 2026 CX-5s had Google Assistant, but for 2027, the more advanced Google Gemini interactive voice-control tech is standard across the line. Otherwise, the CX-5 is unchanged.

Fuel Economy

A hybrid powertrain is expected to join the CX-5 lineup later in 2027 or for model-year ‘28, but for now, Mazda’s small SUV sticks with the same 2.5-liter four-cylinder it’s had since this generation launched for the 2017 model year. The engine makes 187 hp and 186 pounds-feet of torque. It’s paired with a six-speed automatic transmission and standard AWD.

Interior Features

In the entry-level CX-5 2.5S, Mazda spent its money on tech. A 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and a 12.9-inch touchscreen are standard, the latter with Google Built-In and Google Gemini, navigation, wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and eight speakers. While the seats are cloth and the fronts manually adjustable, Mazda does throw in a couple of upmarket features on the base trim, namely dual-zone automatic climate control and a reclining rear bench seat. Exterior features include 17-inch aluminum wheels and LED front lighting.

Nor does Mazda skimp on safety. Standard driver-assistance technologies include forward collision warning with automatic braking, adaptive cruise control, lane departure steering assist, blind spot intervention, rear cross-traffic alert with automatic emergency braking, a driver-attention monitor, front and rear parking sensors, and automatic high beams.

One step up, the 2.5 S Select nets synthetic leather upholstery along with wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and phone charging. It also gets keyless entry, tinted windows and heated exterior mirrors.

Advance from Select to Preferred and you’ll also get 19-inch wheels, windshield-wiper de-icers and a power liftgate. Inside, the Preferred adds heated front seats, a power-adjustable driver’s seat with memory settings, a heated steering wheel and a head-up display.

The 2.5 S Premium can be distinguished by its black exterior trim — including black 19-inch wheels — panoramic moonroof and signature LED lighting elements front and rear. Mazda splurges on the Premium’s cabin, fitting real leather, ventilated front seats, a power-adjustable front-passenger seat, heated rears, a 12-speaker Bose sound system and ambient lighting.

That leaves little other than safety tech for the range-topping 2.5 S Premium Plus. It adds adaptive headlights that turn with the steering wheel, front cross-traffic alert with automatic braking, a 360-degree camera system, and Mazda’s hands-on Cruising and Traffic Support semi-autonomous tech with lane change assist. Elsewhere, the Plus adds a larger 15.6-inch touchscreen, paddle shifters and a hands-free power liftgate.

Versus the Competition

The Mazda’s base price lands it right in the middle of the fight against its front- and all-wheel-drive rivals, but its generous safety tech suite and upscale equipment make the Mazda rather appealing. If you want more power or better fuel economy, you’ll have to check out the CX-50.
