CARS.COMHyundai announced today that the new trim level for its entry-level Accent subcompact — the Value Edition sedan — will run $17,285 including destination. The Value Edition comes with a standard automatic transmission that helps make it $705 more than the Accent sedan’s base SE trim with its optional automatic.

Few statements can draw revelers like “check out my sweet new Hyundai Accent Value Edition,” but that $705 packs a punch, with six useful features missing on the SE sedan: 16-inch alloy rims (versus 14-inch steel wheels), rear disc brakes, cruise control, steering-wheel audio controls, a console storage bin, and Bluetooth phone and audio streaming. Power windows and locks, remote keyless entry and air conditioning are standard on all trims, as is Hyundai’s excellent warranty.

The current Accent fared reasonably well against other subcompacts when it hit the market five model years ago, but today’s car — which also comes as a four-door hatchback — remains largely the same, and it’s basic transportation. A moonroof, backup camera, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are unavailable, and the sedan’s crash tests are cause for concern.

Still, the Accent is cheap, with average transaction prices well below competitors such as the Chevrolet Sonic, Ford Fiesta, Honda Fit and Nissan Versa. It’s unclear when the 2017 Accent hits dealerships; when asked, a Hyundai spokesman didn’t have an immediate answer.
