It’s a hair-pulling week for Lexus families. On Tuesday, the brand released a teaser of an all-new model called the TX, believed to be a three-row companion to Toyota’s new Grand Highlander. Today, Lexus let slip a pair of close-cropped shots of the next-generation three-row GX, its traditional body-on-frame offering that packs more off-road capability than most buyers would know what to do with — and not a year (or five) too soon: Introduced for the 2010 model year, the current GX has been on sale twice as long as the usual vehicle life cycle.
The photos provide better insight into the marketing of the 2024 GX than they do the vehicle itself. It’s muddy and appears to wear chunky, angular styling with all the machismo of a sledgehammer — or all the machismo of its big brother, the LX, which the hood, fender and headlight could’ve been lifted directly from.
Details are thin, but expect the new GX to finally ditch its 301-horsepower, 4.6-liter V-8, the last such engine in Lexus’ SUV portfolio; even the LX swapped its V-8 for a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V-6 for 2022. With the TX likely aimed at families that want three rows of comfort, the GX will be freed to cater to families that want three rows of capability. It’s reasonable to expect features like the two-speed transfer case, locking center differential and active anti-roll system to remain.
Maybe the choice between three-row Lexus SUVs won’t be so hard after all. The TX and GX are shaping up to be about as similar as steak and ice cream. Come to think of it, both sound good …
