Looks like: Mitsubishi is copying Lexus’ grille, and why would they want to do that?
Defining characteristics: Low-slung crossover styling with autonomous driving features
Ridiculous features: Uh, not much, really. The automaker is really aiming to be practical with this thing
Chance of being mass-produced: Hard to say, but Mitsubishi says it looks to the future
CARS.COM — On the one hand, the Mitsubishi eX Concept can be seen as a pragmatic look at where the auto industry is headed. On the other hand, it could be seen as the automaker dumping out all the latest trends and sticking them in its concept: Autonomous driving! Electric drivetrain! Blind spot warning! Self-parking! Connected cars! Mannequin! Monorail!
OK, maybe not so much those last two, but seriously, every other thing on that list, plus more, is part of the eX Concept. It debuted at the 2016 Los Angeles Auto Show.
Interestingly, the concept is designed to use both cameras and sensors to read the road and decide how the car should react. There’s also a Gravel and a Snow mode for the really sloppy stuff. Finally, there’s an electric socket that can power appliances while you’re tailgating or whatnot.
Aside from the technology, another interesting bit of the eX Concept is that Mitsubishi says it points toward the latest iteration of the company’s Dynamic Shield front design. Rather than go for a more traditional, upright SUV design, Mitsubishi opted for a more low-slung hatchback or shooting-brake design. It’s a good look.
