Acura teased the interior of the forthcoming MDX Prototype, releasing a 44-second video that shows various parts of the concept car that’s expected to closely preview the next generation of its three-row luxury SUV. The cabin, bathed under blue and red lighting, indicates a wraparound dashboard with a similar, if less aggressive, take on the twin-cowl theme in the RDX SUV and just-redesigned TLX sedan.

Acura says the MDX Prototype sports virtual gauges, massaging front seats, open-pore wood and French-stitched leather, with a new premium 25-speaker stereo from longtime partner ELS. Like both its brand siblings, the MDX will employ a push-button gear selector and what appears to be Acura’s True Touchpad Interface, a system that employs two touch-sensitive pads to control a touchless widescreen mounted high atop the dash. We found it rather unintuitive in the RDX and no better in the TLX,  but it seems Acura is doubling down on the interface.

The brand, a luxury division of Honda, will release the MDX Prototype Oct. 14. It’s a safe bet the production MDX will largely mirror it, as is Acura’s tradition. The 2014 MDX Prototype previewed the third-generation MDX, for example, while the 2019 RDX Prototype soon led to a redesigned RDX. In both cases, the production model came mere weeks after the prototype.

That was during a conventional auto-show cadence that’s now been upended by the COVID-19 pandemic, but it’s safe to say a production MDX will come soon after the prototype’s unveiling. Indeed, Acura released a statement that the forthcoming MDX Prototype “presages the arrival” of a fourth-generation MDX, which arrives in early 2021 “as the most premium and performance-focused MDX in Acura history.” Stay tuned.
