Revised Engine, New Gearbox for 2020 Hyundai Sonata

Hyundai continues to dribble out details on its redesigned 2020 Sonata, set for a U.S. debut at the 2019 New York International Auto Show in April. In the weeks since the mid-size sedan’s March 5 unveiling, we’ve learned the Sonata will eventually share its third-generation platform with other Hyundai products, offer a Tesla-style smartphone-as-key system and get a new Bose stereo upgrade. Now Hyundai has revealed at least one offering under the hood: a turbocharged 1.6-liter engine with an estimated 180 horsepower and 195 pounds-feet of torque.

The displacement and output appear similar to an Eco variant of the outgoing Sonata, which carried a 1.6-liter turbo four-cylinder. Hyundai spokesman Miles Johnson confirmed to Cars.com that the carryover engine has been revised. At minimum, one aspect will be new: The 1.6-liter engine can pair with a conventional eight-speed automatic transmission, Hyundai said. The outgoing Sonata Eco paired its 1.6-liter with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic.

The outgoing Sonata offered five drivetrains, including hybrid and plug-in hybrid variants, and Johnson confirmed more drivetrains will follow for the 2020 model. Hyundai also tipped its hand on a few other features for the new Sonata, among them a “built-in cam” and “passenger comfort seat,” but it didn’t reveal further details. Such systems will be on display with the car at the 2019 Seoul Motor Show, though it’s unclear which will make it to the U.S. version of the redesigned car.
