What should I do if my car is recalled?

Every recall is serious, so it’s important that you contact an authorized service center or your local dealer as soon as possible.

How does a recall happen?

Automakers issue recalls to fix defects, or sometimes just to check for them. Every owner of a recalled model will be contacted by mail to bring their car to an authorized service center or dealer for evaluation. Any defective parts will be replaced at no cost to the car owner.

What should I do if I think my car is unsafe?

You don’t have to wait to be contacted by mail which can be 2-3 months after a recall announcement. If you believe your car may have a safety defect, schedule an appointment for service and remember to save any documents of any repairs. If the car is recalled later for the same issue, you may be eligible for reimbursement.

Who is NHTSA?

Every recall is registered with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. This is the same information in the Cars.com recall database. NHTSA is also often responsible for requesting a recall after investigating common safety problems or receiving complaints from owners, however, these don’t always lead to car recalls.
