Expert 2026 BMW Z4 review

bmw z4 final edition 2026 exterior oem 01 jpg
Our expert's take

Full article
bmw z4 final edition 2026 exterior oem 01 jpg

Key Points

  • BMW is discontinuing the Z4 for the 2027 model year.
  • The limited-run Z4 Final Edition is based on the 382-horsepower Z4 M40i and will start at $78,675 (includes $1,175 destination fee).
  • Features exclusive exterior and interior treatments

It’s nowhere near as aspirational, but the BMW Z4 is rarer than a Ferrari, the German roadster being outsold by exotics with prancing-horse badges by more than 46%. So, it comes as little surprise that BMW is closing the books on the Z4 — not just the current generation, which dates to 2019, but the model as a whole.

Going Out With a Bang

BMW is observing the end of this era with the Z4 Final Edition, a limited-production model based on the powerful Z4 M40i. Like the M40i, the Final Edition packs a 382-hp, turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six-cylinder engine with 369 pounds-feet of torque. Buyers will have a no-cost choice between a six-speed manual transmission and an eight-speed automatic. The Final Edition also features the M40i’s adaptive sport suspension, M Sport differential and upgraded brakes. Cars fitted with the manual transmission get the same springs and suspension tuning as the Edition Handschalter (German for “hand shift”) Package debuted for 2025.

Paint It Black

The Final Edition’s BMW Individual Frozen Black matte paint is set off by the Shadowline Package, which includes gloss-black finishes on the mirror housings, grille trim and exhaust finishers, as well as red brake calipers. A Moonlight Black top — black cloth with a silvery shimmer — and staggered 19-inch front and 20-inch rear wheels finish off the look.

Inside, the Final Edition is upholstered in black leather and synthetic suede, with red stitching and BMW’s M tricolor red and two-tone blue accents on the seat belts. Exclusive “Final Edition” sill plates identify this as not just a matte-black Z4.

BMW also fits virtually every available option to the Final Edition. It comes with the Driving Assistance Package (additional active-safety features), Premium Package (a head-up display and automated parking) and a 12-speaker Harman Kardon sound system.

Release Date and Pricing

BMW isn’t saying specifically how many Final Editions it will build but says the number will be “very small.” It will be available next spring and priced at $78,675.
