Expert 2017 Chevrolet Sonic review

our expert's take

Vehicle Overview

What is it: The Sonic is compact car, available in either hatchback or sedan bodystyles, with either a six-speed automatic or six-speed manual transmission. It competes with the Honda Fit, Toyota Yaris, Ford Fiesta and Nissan Versa.
New for 2017: The Sonic gets new styling, updated interior and new technology, including optional Apple CarPlay, Andiod Auto and 4G LTE Wi-Fi.
Chevrolet has unveiled the latest versions of its subcompact Sonic sedan and hatchback ahead of the 2016 New York International Auto Show. GM’s diminutive car gets new styling and some updated interior technology.

Exterior
The biggest changes to the new Sonic are visual, with fresh front-end styling that brings the Sonic in line with the rest of the new Chevrolet lineup. The headlights and grille look like smaller versions of what the new 2016 Malibu and revised 2017 Trax SUV wear, themselves inspired by the most recent Impala redo. New taillights and bumper are present out back, while there’s a choice of three wheel sizes and four new colors.
The RS package sticks around for 2017, and continues as an appearance package only, but Chevy hasn’t said exactly what the changes will be for the RS model’s exterior.

Interior
The cabin gets a little sprucing up; a new gauge cluster with an analog speedometer replaces the previous digital one, while a segment-exclusive power driver’s seat is now optional. A new standard 7-inch touch-screen has been added for Chevrolet MyLink multimedia systems, while optional are Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and 4G LTE Wi-Fi that lets you connect up to seven wireless devices.
The RS trim level brings some sportier interior duds, including piano-black trim, an RS-badged flat-bottom steering wheel, optional red cloth seats and RS logo floormats. Other new optional equipment includes keyless entry and start and heated seats and steering wheel.

Under the Hood
Mechanically, the Sonic is unchanged, sporting a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine mated to either a six-speed manual or automatic transmission. Chevy did not give power or fuel economy ratings for the 1.8-liter engine, saying only that it should be similar to the 2016 version. The optional engine is a 138-horsepower, turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder.
Safety
With the change in styling comes additional electronic safety equipment. The Sonic now features optional forward collision warning and lane departure warning. Rear parking assist sensors are newly optional and a backup camera is standard.
Look for the new Sonic sedan and hatchback to hit dealers this autumn.

  • Costly Major Repairs on REPEAT

One costly repair after another. Like others have said, this car model is a LEMON! Bought it used in 2019 for a little under $12k with only 16,000 miles on it, as it was a former rental. 4 years later and we've spent half this price in major repairs. AC compressor has failed TWICE, engine overheated on the highway due to major leaks/failures in the heating and cooling system which cost almost $3000 to repair, and now just today I'm spending another $1000 to replace the wheel hub and bearing assembly for both front tires. I'm surprised this car hasn't failed on me and gotten me into an accident with how many issues it has had. Contacted GMC to get reimbursed for so many of the issues (car's engine failed at only 36,000 miles) and they had the audacity to laugh in our face and reimburse only $200 for the $3k-4k we've put into parts and repairs. The dealership we bought this car from also ghosted us completely. BEWARE OF THIS MODEL AND CHEVROLET/GMC!!!

  • Great car so far. Handles hills on the freeway.

Found our car at a local Toyota dealership. Great service. Was looking for Low mileage and a newer car. Great gas mileage also. Paid car off, but didn't get any deal for doing that was hoping to get free oil changes like my son did.

  • Sonic engine is a coolant leaker.

I have 2019 chevy sonic. Bought it used. With 52k on odometer. Around 62k. Experiencing. Leak after leak. Everything is plastic. If you purchase keep an eye on coolant level. Check weekly. Other than that love the car.

  • One repair after another!

We bought a 2017 turbo new, we have had problem after problem after about 50,000 miles, two water pumps, AC problems, timing belt replaced twice, once because of botched repairs at dealership. Now one of the cylinders isn’t holding pressure and we are still paying on this stupid thing! I have been told by two mechanics that it’s cheaper to replace the engine, than to take it apart and fix only what’s broken. A new (used) engine is between $2000 and $4500 not including labor! That is a down payment on a new car. And even if I replace the engine how do I know there won’t be another major repair 2 months from now? Giving up! If you buy one, get rid of it before the bumper to bumper expires or you will end up like me

  • Chevy Sonic is Awesome!

I bought my 2017 Chevy Sonic LT sedan used last year with 45000 miles, what a great car, rides well, plenty of power, nice interior, solid car. Riding in it you can tell its the same chassis as the Buick Encore and Chevy Trax. Its a quiet well controlled ride and handles well too. It does exhibit some road noise but most cars in this class do. Plenty of interior room for me and I'm 6'2" I actually raise the seat up 2 notches and keep it somewhat forward in its track. I get a lot of compliments about it. Mileage is about 32 combined. Given the chance I'd buy it again without hesitation.

  • Money pit plain and simple

This car has given me nothing but problems since purchased . Been in shop multiple times under warranty and to my own mechanic . Same problem every single time and never seems to get fixed . Chevrolet dealership I purchased it from has been very difficult to deal with and honestly not even worth my time or money anymore. GM used to be a good manufacturer but have become bottom of the barrel as far as I’m concerned. I highly suggest avoiding this car and manufacturer for that matter ......

  • Has a few body blemishes but works great!!

The car is great only 21000 miles, has a few blemishes, I guess the coronavirus pandemic caused some confusion or whatever, the paper work wasnt entirely correct, they did offer at home test drive and at home purchase which may contributed to this. Everything is great!

  • Ample basic transportation in a Chevy

The Chevy Sonic is a hidden gem of a car if you are on a budget. A very practical design that has been in production since 2012. Not over-priced, adequate power, automatic transmission. Can be used as a first-time car or as down-sized frugality.
