2013 STX 4x2 Supercab

In April I purchased a 2013 STX Supercab (4x2, 6.5' bed, 5.0L V8, tow package, 7100#GVWR) to replace my aging- yet still perfectly functional- 2001 Ford Ranger Supercab. Now that I've put around 4,000 miles on her, I think I've got a fair amount of OTR experience in order to write a review of this truck. Pros: Acceleration- this thing will blow your hair back when you need to get moving. (The healthy growl from the exhaust sounds cool, too.) I have no problems swiftly accelerating to highway speeds and merging with traffic. The shifting is very smooth, and doesn't wander or hunt for gears the way the transmission on the Ram I test drove did. It will cruise at 60mph at approx 1650RPM. Handling- I haven't noticed any issues with sway during sudden turns. The steering feels crisp and is responsive without being overly sensitive. Suspension- even without any cargo, this truck rides VERY well. It is quieter and smoother than most cars I've driven, and practically ignores jarring bumps & pavement cracks. I live in farm country and have driven it down some rather iffy roads, and it handles even the roughest washboards with relative ease. Put a load in it, and it only gets better. Fuel economy- I've been averaging 17.8mpg, which is fairly good for a beast this size with a hungry V8 to feed. My old Ranger (4.0L V6, 4x2, Supercab) actually got the same gas mileage, even though it's a much smaller truck with a smaller engine! Engine- I LOVE the 5.0L Coyote engine! It idles very smoothly, yet gives quite impressive performance. It's a real good match for this truck (the 5.4 Hemi on a Ram may be bigger, but I honestly believe the 5.0L actually outperforms it). Interior- the seats are very comfortable, and fit & finish are very good for this more-or-less utilitarian model. No rattles! Everything seems to be right where it 'needs' to be from the driver's seat, without any awkward (and potentially distracting/dangerous) reaching/stooping. Now, on to the cons: Interior storage! Honestly, the ONE thing that this truck lacks is a nice console storage area between the front seats. The Ram has a brilliantly designed cavernous storage bin, while this truck has a fold down seat with an awkward flip-up mechanism covering a puny storage container. The truck also lacks seatback pockets, which would be extremely handy & useful. The audio system- it's got great sound, but all the buttons are a serious distraction for a driver. (The Sync system is quite useful, but it takes a while to get used to.) So, there you have it- two relatively minor 'cons' and a long list of 'pros'. I still wish Ford made the Ranger in the US, but the F150 is a machine you cannot go wrong with (FYI I live in rabid Chevy country, too, so that's really saying something).

360 degree tough

I have owned this truck for 7 months now. 2013 STX super cab with the 5.0, 4X4, 3.73 electronic locking rear, 18" wheels . Power everything. Truck will tow 9300. Just drug a 6X12 enclosed trailer 962 miles. Love the way this thing pulls. Hardly notice the weight but it does shift down on hills running 70 towing a trailer with wind drag. Didn't shift down at all pulling loaded utility trailer. Over all I love the look, performance and comfort. Will be buying Ford again.

Just Bought it - New to Board

So far so good. I maybe rueing getting the 8' bed - she's long 162" WB and just under 20 1/2' long. XL, 2 WD, supercab, 5.0 with 101A option package that include cloth seats, power everything, cruise, tow package, better stereo (but noSirius). Outside is a real plain jane, gray steel 17" wheels with 235/75 17" wheels. Have 150 miles on it - took it to the beach yesterday to ride bikes around the bay. Plenty of pick up and go. Think it comes in 7.2 seconds 0-60, about a half second or so slower than my V-6 2010 Camero. Got a screaming YE deal - $3,000 Ford rebate plus $1,030 more off of MSRP and 1.98% financing for 5 years. Through the credit union buying service. So far only issue is parking it because it so long, but like the bed size because it will fit sheets of plywood or wall board with the tailgate up. Plus moving stuff - like my son when he goes to or comes back from college. Will sure help. What is the deal with the oil? It takes either synthetic mix or full synthetic. Also the crank takes 7.7 quarts to fill. That's like $50 just for oil to do the oil change. Like being able to use unleaded gas. Can't comment yet on reliability because I haven't had it long enough. No initial problems to report. Everything seems tight and right. Did fine on the freeway, pick up was excellent for a vehcile of it size and going through the interchange, it handled the turns fine, held very stable. Handled pretty well (not like the Camero, but still very good) and accelerated up the hill out of Mission Valley (passing the 4 bangers in front of me that lack enough power). Should do great towing a travel trailer, no problem. Glad I got the 5.0! Had an '89 5.0 Mustang - 225 hp/300 torque. This one is 360 hp/380 ftlb. and she shows it. Back later with more news after I get her broken in. Order a bed rug matt today from Whitney.

Most Truck For The Money

2013 F-150 4x4 SC, FX4, 145 WB, 5.0 engine, no options (stripped down FX4) I picked the 5.0 engine over the 3.5 EB cause I question the reliability of the twin turbo's, to me simple is better. I use a truck to haul heavy loads unlike most guys are afraid to scratch their bed. It has more than enough power than I need, it will burn tire. My neighbor that owns a 2011 Dodge says he has the nicest truck in town,,, now with my new F-150 I have the nicest truck in town! Dodge guys hate F-150's!

Best Truck

I just traded in a top-of-the-line Silverado. In fact it even had the MAX 6 liter engine and all the goodies you can have like sun roof, 20" wheels, handling package etc. I have always owned Fords and wanted to try a Chevy. I am so glad to be back in a ford. The quality can not be compared to the Chevy. Plus, the Chevy cost ma an arm and a leg in repairs, still not reliable. Of all the Ford Trucks I have owned, I NEVER took one back for a repair. That's saying a lot. I have learned my lesson. Its Fords from now on.

Great truck

I bought the truck to pull a boat that is about 5000# with trailer. It pulls it great. the 5L with 4x4 is perfect. I'm getting 15.5-16.2 MPG without towing and 10-12 while towing. The supercrew is the largest back seat I have ever seen.
