Expert 2007 Isuzu Ascender review

our expert's take
Our expert's take

our expert's take

Vehicle Overview
Isuzu’s latest sport utility vehicle went on sale for the 2003 model year and replaced the company’s long-lived Trooper. The Ascender shares its platform with General Motors’ midsize SUVs. It is smaller than typical full-size SUVs. For 2007, the larger seven-passenger Ascender has been discontinued.

The SUV is powered by a 275-horsepower inline-six-cylinder engine. For 2006 added as standard GM’s StabiliTrak electronic stability system.

Ascenders come with either rear-wheel drive or on-demand four-wheel drive. The four-wheel-drive system has four modes: automatic, 4-Low, 2-High and 4-High.

Several option groups that are comparable to additional trim levels are offered. The LS package includes traction control, a limited-slip differential, a sunroof, a six-CD changer and a roof rack. Leather and Luxury packages are available.

Exterior
Exhibiting a traditional two-box SUV profile, the Ascender features 17-inch alloy wheels, overfenders and bodyside moldings. For 2007, machined-finish alloy wheels replace painted wheels and Bering Blue Metallic and Storm Gray Metallic are new paint colors. The Ascender features body-on-frame construction and rack-and-pinion steering.

Interior
Second-row passengers get a 65/35-split, folding seat. The second-row seats have a flip-and-tumble feature. Ascenders have dual-zone air conditioning, power windows and locks, and a CD player. The OnStar communication system has been dropped as an option.

Under the Hood
The Ascender’s 4.2-liter inline-six-cylinder generates 291 hp and 277 pounds-feet of torque. Each engine teams with a four-speed automatic transmission.

Safety
Daytime running lights, an electronic stability system and antilock brakes are standard. Two-row side curtain-type airbags are optional. A tire pressure monitoring system is standard for 2007.

Driving Impressions
The Ascender isn’t exactly a standout in the crowded SUV field, but at least it falls at the appealing end of the spectrum. Ascenders run quietly and accelerate vigorously from a standstill. Handling is confident for an SUV, and the ride is quite compliant. The seat bottoms are somewhat hard, and the seatbacks have virtually no side bolstering to keep occupants in place during turns.

  • My 2007 Ascender is our daily driver.

My 2007 Ascender is our daily driver. It has almost 260,000 miles and still run like new. Quiet and comfortable, cold ac, safe to drive with solid body, strong engine and powerful transmission. Driven daily up and down the hill where I live since buying this car. Never had a major issue. Very easy to do your own DIY repair and maintenance. Cheap replacement parts and easy accesibility because it has almost similar parts used on Chevy Envoy, Trailblazer, GMC, Rainer etc.. I wanted to buy a new SUV but I can’t because this SUV doesn’t want to give up. I love it!

  • Best SUV I’ve ever owned!

I bought my 2007 Isuzu Ascender brand new. It’s been the best, most reliable vehicle I have ever owned. It currently has 127,000 miles on it and runs like a dream. I feel steady in it, not like I am about to tip over which I’ve felt while test driving other SUV’s. Yes, I have had to do work to it throughout the years, but the things I’ve had done are because of typical wear and tear. One bad thing though is the at the body seems to be wearing out faster than the engine. My back hatch hinges rusted out and I can’t open the hatch now. Other than that, if I had an opportunity to buy another Isuzu Ascender, I would buy it in a heartbeat. I baby my SUV, give it regular maintenance, and do repairs as they become necessary. I don’t push it hard, but if I need to, such as passing a car quickly, it moves! I love the feeling of stability on the road and the way it sits up high. God blessed me with this SUV. It’s gotten me through several moves and through the United States. And the air conditional still works great after all these years! I love my SUV and plan on running it until it can’t go another inch!

  • Worst car I've owned

Bought my ascender new in 2007 it now has 42,000 miles on it and the gas /fuel sending unit went out I looked online and found out that starting in 2004 these vehicles have had repeated problems with this but yet isuzu won't issue a recall on the vehicles even though it is clearly a defect in them . I had to have it fixed at my own expense . Shame on you Isuzu.

I got this as a gift from my hubby. Within the first month my first blow out. Then the fuel gage would act up 5 times total. My power controlling the windows and locks and mirrors. 3 times. I have had it and the battery as well, Don't recommend this vehicle

  • great car good deal

i had the car for a while now and it easily the most comfortable ride i had. it handles the road seamlessly and quietly. it is not the most beautiful vehicle out there but i bought an suv and not a beauty queen. they cost much more and the ride is usually not as comfortable... sorry for the crudeness, i caught myself too late and the delete button is busy deleting my open letter to the WHO.

  • great incentives

Wasn't planning on getting another Isuzu, but the deal offered was phenomenal. Just like my 2002 Rodeo, I couldn't believe I could get a six-cylinder SUV built on a truck frame for so cheap--I dreaded the possibility of settling for a "compact SUV."

Lot better than anything else that I have had. It rides real smooth and is extremely comfortable. It is really nice on the inside as well.

  • In 3 years, it's been in the service dept 8 times!

The car rides well and looks nice, but does not perform well. Mulitple items stopped working within the first 30,000 miles, and continue to have the same problems (ie window motors go out often, air conditioning goes out, seals give way and fans go out, windshield wipers stop working). Some of these items were recalled, however none of the recall notices were received, despite the car being purchased new.
