2006 Jeep Commander

Great vehicle, seems solidly built. The styling isn't for everyone but I love it, particularily the functional metal hex head interior screws, almost industrial looking. I like the Commander because it looks like a vehicle that cost much more. i bought a base model with 4x4 and the V-8 as the only real options and the price was what I considered a great deal for its size. I have the 4.8liter V8 and it is a little doggy and I get about 17.6MPG, which isn't great but better than a Tahoe or Expedition. The 3rd row seat is tight as can be expected. I would say the cut off age for anything more than a 10 minute trip is 6 years old. The interior seems very durable, although the cloth seats seem to stain easily, even from water but I love the material, they used so it is a fair trade off. The worse thing about this vehicle is the windshield anlge, you WILL go through windshileds or have to live with chips and stars. The second worse is the rear visibility, but the standard back up sensors are really helpful. The only complaint I have with workmanship is when I first took delivery (brought over from another dealership sight unseen) there were very noticeable swirls in the paint (dark "beryl" green). The dealership did buff the paint out and it helped, however I was a little bit discouraged when they tried to justify the problem by saying that other Jeeps have the same problem (?). I have had a bad battery replaced and the passenger automatic window doesn't like to go up automatically, but other than that i have had 37,000 absoltuley worry miles.

Love the room!

We test drove a lot of Suv's before settling for the 06 Commander. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the 4Runner but it was out of our budget and well there wasn't alot of room for 2 carseats. I love the comfort of the vehicle and there is plenty of room for me to pop to the back when they get fussy. My husband talked me into getting it because he liked the looks of it. Well done!

31,000 miles no problems to report

update from previous post Jan-2009 This vehicle continues to perform well. At this point, I plan to keep this Commander. V8 engine has exceeded my expectations. Maybe I purchased one of the good ones. Waiting for snow!

Great Jeep, 1 Reason why it's not so great

I do love everything about our Jeep Commander especially the power from the Hemi. Even my Lotus have a hard time catching up to it with my wife driving behind the wheel. The only issue I have is the Engine Stall. When we come to a stop or to slow down below 5mph or less, the engine hesitates or will stall. Lights will remain on but you won't be able to steer or brake because of the loss of power. This is an issue that the dealer can not trace with their computer or reader. No Check Engine Light also. Dealer states that services needed will fix the problems but has not. (Battery replacement, Major Tune-Up ect.) Otherwise, I Love this Jeep....

not all i expected

I had leased the vehicle ,slightly disillusioned by what the companies responsibitities were.. i believed that bumper to bumper meant everything any thing in between. I was wrong .. brakes seem to have some problem, it whistled on the highway everyonce in a while noticed it with a/c in summer..would hesitate on a sharp slow turn these things were not covered under a lease. I originally wanted the vehicle for its 3rd row seating and for all the reasons you want an suv. The interior was not desighned so well for the comfort or visibility of the driver.. ex.I f it was sunny you pull down the visor, this now obstucts your view, you can't see the light at an intersection! the third row option is terrible blind spot . THANKGOD for the censors, love those! and the stadium seating really only good for children adults are not comfortable ,especially for long rides. Its performance in the snow has been great. but what really bothered me was its lack of power, it really lagged behind difficuult when traveling on the highway. yes its a gas guzzler but I knew that getting into an suv..I will miss my heated seats and my backup sensors...but I'm glad its a lease and not my problem anymore!

Great for Family

Our Jeep has been a great purchase. It rides like a car and the seating is great. The second row can easily accomodate adults with ample leg room. The fold down third row seats and DVD system is a bonus. Our Jeep has the Quadra Drive II and has worked great on our ski trips. I only wish the Jeep had a little more power to maintain speed on steep inclines. We have the 4.7 V-8. The 5.7 would probably do the trick. Overall, a very good vehicle.

Thought It was great, now I am starting to wonder!

Purchased it new, have not even had it a year yet. I did Love it, I guess I still do like the ride an all, so there are things that I would recommend on it, but then I noticed a few things, like the hiccups when leaving a light, etc. Sometimes when just driving it would seem to starve for fuel. It was at the 20,000 mark, the noise, usually when I was braking, but you would of thought that the drive shaft was falling out. They tell me that it is nothing but the calipers. You can take it apart and clean it, but it is not under warranty! I have been attempting to get someone to look at it way prior to warranty ending, but nobody would believe the noise. So now I either have to foot the bill or live with the noise. I was actually told not to do it by the dealer because the brakes would have to be done around the 40 - 45,000 mark anyways. I still don't believe that it is the brakes???? I purchased a new vehicle so that I would not have these problems / concerns. Maybe I should go back to the Chevy!

Very comfortable but unreliable

The Commander is very comfortable but unreliable. When the car continues running, it's a great ride, superior seating with 2nd and 3rd rows elevated and very smooth. We loved the ride and styling, but we wish we had researched the internet more carefully before we bought the car. Our '06 4x4 Commander, purchased Feb '07, has completely turned itself off 5 times, leaving us with no brakes, steering or electrical. We drive in treacherous mountain conditions and steep grades at freeway speed, and Chrysler has no solution. We have been in and out of the service department repeatedly. Chrysler is aware of the problem in this and other models, but has done nothing. No diagnostics show up, the regional service manager gives us lip service, and the dealer has "generously" offered us an $11,000 trade in loss on a 4 month old car.
