Expert 1998 Lincoln Mark VIII review

our expert's take
Our expert's take
By Jim Mateja
Full article
our expert's take

Distinctive design, a bevy of luxury doodads, a quiet yet lively 4.6-liter,290-h.p., 32-valve V-8 and a cute feature called puddle lamps make the 1998Lincoln Mark VIII appealing–until you stop at a friend’s house to chauffeuranother couple to dinner.

Watching back-seat riders enter the car is not pleasant.

Sure, the two front seats power forward when the seat backs are reclined toallow somewhat easier access to the back, but when paying $40,000 for a car, there should be a more civilized way of getting folks in the back withoutreaching for the can of Crisco.

Also, the front- and rear-seat bottoms are a bit short and don’t offerenough thigh support. So if the restaurant is a lengthy trip from home, youhave hungry and ornery passengers.

Two doors just don’t do it unless you travel alone a lot.

The 1998 Lincoln Town Car and Continental sedans are much more roomy, comfortable and technologically advanced when it comes to suspension andsteering than the Mark VIII coupe.

One neat feature, however, is puddle lamps, lights under the outsidemirrors that flash on when you press the power-lock key fob. The lamps lightthe ground below the door so you don’t accidentally place the wingtips orheels in snow, mud or other unpleasant matter when entering or exiting thecar.

The lights also are brilliant enough to discourage the uninvited fromstrolling too close.

Noteworthy features are dual air bags, four-wheel anti-lock brakes,all-speed traction control, fully independent air suspension andspeed-sensitive variable assist power steering.

The Mark VIII we tested starts at $39,320. Add $1,515 for the powermoonroof, $290 for heated seats, $670 for a trunk-mounted CD changer andyou’re at $41,795 and still only have two doors. Freight runs $670.

  • Most excellent car...ever...for me.

When the Mark VIII came out, I wanted one. I was fresh out of the Military. My friend had a 93, and he let me drive it, I was hooked, just couldn't afford it. I finally had the opportunity to get one...at age 61, a 98. This car will be in my will, it's going nowhere. I Love This Car.

  • coolest car I have ever owned!

98 Lincoln Mark Viii LSC! 1998 was the last year the Mark VIII was made and was the last year Lincoln ever made a hot rod! That was just one of the reasons I wanted this car! It turns heads everywhere I go due to its timeless design and not really any others on the road today. I had plans to keep it forever but unfortunately life got in the way so I have to part ways... I have upgraded the air ride suspension with Strutmasters spring conversion kit. only ever use synthetic oil and premium gas... It is my daily driver! There is no rust only a few small dents and some scratches. The only wear to the black leather is on the driver seat, which is not bad at all. Both power seat motors work when they want to as does the telescopic steering wheel controls. The back seats are still pretty much brand new! Non smoker car so no bad smell! Going to need 2 front tires soon due to needing the alignment done, both back tires are fine. Window tint is good and at legal limit for florida. Only mechanical issue is the left rear ABS sensor needing to be replaced, I unfortunately am having a hard time tracking one down. My loss could be your gain! Did I mention it has the same motor as the Ford Cobra that year?!

  • 300 HP BARCALOUNGER!

I finally traded my 1998 MKVIII LSC after 290,000 miles and a month later wanted it back! The engine/tranny/driveline was perfect (qt of oil every 6,000 miles!) and running as strong as new. I did replace the air shocks with coils, replaced the blend door and door handles & 1 headlight but I never had a car that could eat miles like this one. Every option, and it just anticipated your every need without being a technonightmare. I installed a Superchip without governor and it would honestly do over 130 mph. Once you get past 3000 rpms and the second intake runners open, it revs very quickly. And the ride is much more comfortable than the Corvette which preceded it.

  • Fun, fun, fun!

I can't say enough about my '97 Lincoln Mark VIII. I am a LIncoln fan and own a 1969 Lincoln MarkIII. The Mark VIII has beautiful lines, beautiful interior and has very quick acceleration. If you ever get the chance to drive one, take the chance! I have always loved the looks of the Mark VIII and never thought I would even have the chance drive one, even more so to be the proud owner. I'm ecstatic!

  • The last of a great line of cars

For a car that withered in sales and gave way to the Navigator. It amazes me how everyone comments and likes this car when I drive it around. There are no more 2 door personal Luxury cars on the market. It has power comfort reliability and style. All the cars today look the same. The car has distinctive beauty. My only complaints are the integrity of the interior and traction in rain or snow.
