I had a Mazda Protege for 14 years. It was extremely reliable. I decided that it was time to trade it in. After trying several different cars, I once again found the 2017 Mazda 3 to be the best fit for me. I like all the new safety features. The rear view camera is a big help. It also has a good audio system. The exterior of the car is rather sleek looking. The customer service people were very nice to work with. Hoping that this Mazda will be as reliable as my last one.

Best Small Sedan
Just buy it if you can, it's luxury, but it's not. This car has great pick up, handles curves, smooth ride, great technology, and it's attractive this car is like perfect! The only downside is the A/T shift feels a little delayed, and it's a little tight for taller people, and bigger people. If you are taller and bigger person, I'd recommend the sedan over the 5 door hatch. Or just get the 6 if it's in your budget.

Chicago Auto Show Test Drive
I test drove this car during the 2017 Chicago Auto Show. It drove really well, had tons of safety features, and could even fit my 6'3" companion comfortably in the back seat. I drove the 5 door. Although the interior styling wasn't really my style, I think it would be a good value purchase.

Best Kept Secret
I was worried at first that this might not be enough car. I was completely wrong. I got into an accident with my wrangler and decided it was time to move into something smaller and that had a warranty. I got the 2.5 hatch. It is fun to drive, tons of features. After purchasing it I don't know why anyone would drive anything else in the segment. Nothing comes close, this is fun to drive and is easy to look at and loaded with features.

Great Car for the Money
Traded in a '13 Honda Civic for this car so I really don't have any other "newish" car to compare it to. All I can say is "wow"! This car is better than the Civic in every way except for the slightly lower gas mileage but the trade-off was well worth it. Mazda really got this one right in styling and overall design/engineering. In an era of increasingly bizarre body styling (are you listening, Honda?) the Mazda3 is a well thought-out breath of fresh air. The car is easier to get in and out of and more importantly it's easier to see out of. I like the more conventional hood and front-end shape. The finish of the more-sloping hood of the Civic is easily chipped by road debris and, by the way, the overall paint finish of the Mazda3 seems to be much sturdier and scratch-resistant. Performance and handling are much better than the Civic, too. I especially like the throaty exhaust note of the Mazda's 2.0 liter engine. This car is actually fun to drive. It's a real driver's car. The interior is much nicer and the controls are more simple. The stereo is much better, too. One minor complaint is that the wheel covers (I own the base "Sport" trim) stick out too far and get easily damaged on curbs which I suspect all new cars with steel wheels are like this, not just Mazda. I actually prefer steel wheels because I think they "age" better and are easier to take care of than aluminum ones. I just wish lower-priced cars could still be equipped with painted steel wheels and a small center cap like the Honda CR-V and my old Geo Prism. Overall, this car is awesome and I believe Mazda is one of the most under-rated and under-appreciated makes of all. As this is the fourth model year for the third-generation Mazda3 I'm actually surprised that I don't see many of them on the roads.

Nice car with some issues
I've just bought 2017 mazda 3 hatchback w/manual transmission. It is a great looking car, fun to drive, but I have some issues with it: 1) Dashboard reflect in the windshield - it annoys me a lot. 2) Rear view visibility is very bad - small back window, thick pillars. I do not have backup sensors and do not feel very confident while backing up of my driveway. 3) You cannot drive with an open window at highway speeds - the wind noise is unbearable, it makes a horrible rambling sound. 4) I only have few hundred miles of mixed driving, but the fuel economy so far is way below 30. I hope it improves with time. 5) GPS antenna does not seem to work. W/out the maps it is stuck on the same geo-coordinates. With the maps it is frozen at the default San Antonio downtown location. The dealer refuses to help. 6) I did not have a very good buying experiences. I refused to purchase extra warranties. Since that moment I have been treated in a borderline rude manner. The car was not properly prepared for delivery. They "forgot" to affix inspection sticker and to attach the radio antenna. A dealership representative just affixed the plates and pretty much ran away. I am not planning to go back to this dealer ever again.

Nice car for the money
Reviewed a number of cars in the same category by BB and Auto car etc and took the time to test drive several of the recommended cars. In my opinion the Mazda 3 hatchback fit the bill as the best compact, best riding and roomiest car in the field and it was priced right! Wanted a car with some cargo area so checked out the compact SUVs but they didn't offer the benefits of a quiet and comfortable riding vehicle as the Mazda 3 hatchback. And to boot-- the car looks sporty.
