Expert 2003 Mercedes-Benz G-Class review

our expert's take

“You going camping, Grandpa?” asked granddaughter Ashley when she surveyed the ’03 Mercedes-Benz G500, or what’s known in Europe as the Gelaendewagen, resting in the driveway, a vehicle with a roof so tall it looks like a two-story SUV.

While looking more like a motor home than a sport-utility, the Mercedes M-Class sized G500 is one of those tres chic trappings of the celebrity crowd.

People magazine regulars Jennifer Anniston and Brad Pitt each reportedly own one, and Governor-select Arnold Schwarzenegger reportedly owns two.

That’s reportedly because Mercedes, which markets the G500, said it protects the privacy of its owners and doesn’t release names.

While Schwarzenegger is a well known aficionado of the Hummer and reportedly owns a variety of them, his admiration for the G500 obviously comes from it being assembled in his native town of Graz, Austria.

Of course Jennifer, Brad and Arnold have more money than most small countries, so if you want to rub shoulders with your idols at the next G500 club shindig, it’ll cost you a minimum of $73,600 to acquire the wheels needed to gain entree.

Before you run down to the nearest Mercedes store with blank check in hand, consider that the G500 will win no beauty contests.

The tall, flat-box styling dates to the ’70s on a vehicle that, like the Hummer, was intended for rough and rugged go-anywhere military use.

It had been sold through a private European distributor until Mercedes took over in 2002.

Mercedes expected the G500 to attract perhaps 1,000 people a year wanting a vehicle that no one else on the block much less within the state probably would own–unless, of course, you live next to Jennifer, Brad or Arnold.

But it sold more than 2,000 copies in ’02 and has sold more than 1,000 copies in the first seven months of ’03.

“We wish we could get more of them,” Mercedes spokesman Fred Heiler said of a sport-utility vehicle which he admits is “more utilitarian than it is sporty.”

The G500 is powered by a 5-liter, 292-h.p. V-8 teamed with a 5-speed automatic that won’t win Arnold many votes among California environmentalists because it is rated at 12 m.p.g. city/14 m.p.g. highway.

At a $73,600 base price you’d expect the civilian G500 to come fully loaded, and it does with full time all-wheel-drive, four-wheel anti-lock brakes and electronic traction and stability control, which certainly help because with the tall roof, you feel top heavy and need the assurance of keeping the wheels side down.

It also comes with dual-zone climate control, power seats/locks/mirrors/sunroof, leather seats, AM/FM stereo with CD changer, headlight washers and rear window washer/wiper. Add $800 for a Harmon Kardon sound-system upgrade, $550 for backup warning system and $720 for freight.

Strictly personal: Anniversary greetings to the bottle blonde who looks the same (pretty close) as she did at the altar 30-something years ago.

Very reliable, comfortable, gas efficient and appealing. I feel like a king when I am driving this truck. And, it does not often require service.

  • They don't build them like they did in 2003!

2003 G55 AMG's were a much more solid build w/the best engine, great gas mileage, I've owned this car for 15 years and the only thing I've had to update was the radio and speakers! No other vehicle is known to go over 450,000 miles. Timeless!!

  • The Most Fun I've Had is with this car

This car is so much fun to drive. Definitely an eye turner every where I take it. It's also a very hard to find truck. Here is your chance to own it for a fraction of the price. Looks just just a 2017 one. Very minor changes between them.

  • 2003 Mercedes-Benz G500

Great car for the value point! Had a reliable and bulletproof motor, transmission, and drivetrain is solid! You can easily tell that the quality of even the older G-Wagens is of top notch craftsmanship. These are going up in value and now is definelty the time to buy one!

  • WOW

This is a rock solid bullet that turns corners as well as it turns heads. Looks like no other car out there and thats becuase you won't find more than a thousand in the USA. 200 hundred a year for 5 years from what I understand, if its on a new lot its just a 2007 with clever signage but the G-55 is not in production.

  • For two weeks I'm a movie star

a good friend loaned the car to me while away. Have been driving her in the harshest michigan winter. love the heated seats. They are fast and very warm. She handles the slick roads and snow drifts no problem. She feels very "manly". Everytime I put on turn signal I hit the cruise control by mistake. That seems a safety issue. Would need a course in all the controls. Need a co-pilot to operate climate, radio etc. I heard she is bullet proof. Is that so? Kids think she's pretty cool. It's been a treat driving her, although I don't think I could afford the gas over the long haul. It I had the cash, I'd buy her over other similar styel cars although I think she is in a class by herself.

  • I've got what I wanted.

Trying to buy a 320CDI for my wife proved to be my lucky day. Returning from testing the CDI, I saw my next car. I instantly knew that I had to have it: a G-500 Gelaendewagen. I had never driven a vehicle that had another 12" of headroom after I had sat down in it. All switches and dials perfectly located within reach. The cup holder is one strange device. I have never seen one looking more like an afterthought than this thing. The Germans say that they don't have them because, once they are behind the wheel of a car, they focus on driving and don't need to drink designer water. But they have "Autobahns" and we don't. We have to have refreshments, or do we? Then there is the executive basketball net in the passender footwell. What on earth is that supposed to be? Even my sales rep couldn't answer that one. Then I drove it. Its interior elegance and luxory are amazing. The outside is, well, like a wrestler gone Hollywood. Everybody stares at this vehicle. Hard acceleration makes this vehicle roar, really roar out loud. Really made the sounds of a really capable, really big and really fast vehicle. Just what I had always wanted. I am one happy guy. My wife still hasn't got her CDI. Oh, well.
