I fell in love with the GL450 the moment I saw it at the Detroit Auto Show in January 2006. Couldn't wait to get it in July. However, after the first five or so years, I began replacing suspension components and as the car crossed 100k miles, the jerking started. The dealer couldn't figure out what was going on. Three timing belts cut in 3 years, taking out components like the air conditioning and radiator and causing thousands of dollars in damage. Still the dealership couldn't figure out the problem. After doing a transmission flush and reprogramming the transmission, I gave up, expecting the part to completely malfunction before they figured it out. That happened very recently with the check engine light on and the P0016 and P0017 codes, apparently an issue Mercedes had provided an extended warranty for but it had happened to my car after the warranty period had passed. The dealer also said there were transmission issues and I was done at 170k. Kissing Mercedes goodbye and getting an Audi Q7. Also letting EVERYONE I know who cares to listen what a disappointment the car was. It's a pretty car but just garbage under the hood.

We picked up our Premier edition GL last week.. WE LOVE IT!!! Total comfort for 7. Great Benz attention to detail. This is first true luxury full sized 7 passenber SUV.. very quiet and very comfortable ride..great cornering and much better milage then any of the competitors. They have thought of it all on this one with American buyers in mind. I can not think of one issue that is not just right. I would reccomend you get it fully loaded as the base model we test drove feels a little on the cheap side on the interior. We have the rear seat DVD etc which my kids love and works flawlessly (as compared to others we have owned). Sound system is awesome along with the Sirius and Ipod hook up makes this a true road trip car. Mercedes finally did it! We can take the whole family and more in one car!

In the long run, you'll wish you chose a more reliable brand. The '07 GL is a beautiful, capable SUV that performs very well for what it is. The 7-speed transmission is always in exactly the right gear, and the 4.7-liter V-8 is powerful enough for anything from autobahn cruising speeds to off-roading (I've driven it through very deep snow, on the beach, through rocky fields, rough terrain, etc.). This thing is unstoppable thanks to the AIRMATIC suspension. It seats 7 comfortably, and has excellent cargo room. It even gets relatively good fuel economy for a big SUV: I've gotten an average of 17 mpg in city and highway driving, and I often get up to 19, even 20 on long trips. The caveat is that this SUV has quite a few quality and reliability issues. If you want to keep your luxury SUV for longer than 3-4 years, consider one of the Japanese or American competitors. In the first year of ownership, the AIRMATIC pump stopped working and was fixed under warranty, but it was eventually replaced after it stopped working again (it would not rise up and the pump was constantly groaning). The transmission would often get "stuck" in a certain gear and refused to shift, at which point you had to turn off the car and restart it for it be normal again (I figured this somehow "rebooted" the car's computer). This was also repaired under warranty. After this, it started shifting funny, and they had to replace the ENTIRE transmission (under warranty). This would have cost me a fortune. Let's see: $500 oil changes, electronic glitches in the moonroof, flaking chrome, a broken third-row seat motor, and now the latest surprise, a broken steering pump, and a faulty rear engine seal, the total of which will cost about $5000 to repair. The car only has 75k miles at this point. I've owned all kinds of cars over the years, from American to Japanese to German, but this is one of the worst cars I've ever experienced in reliability. But, but.....it's a MERCEDES!

I have owned a GL 450 for 2 1/2 years (currently just under 40K mi.) and have very mixed feelings about it. I've driven nearly every large SUV available, so I now have a pretty good basis for comparison. On the plus side, the GL has a great comfortable ride, plenty of passing power, a great sound system and road noise is minimal. Concerning pretty much everything else, my opinion has tilted toward the negative. Reliability has been the number one problem, and that could partly be the result of it being the first model year. I've had numerous front-end problems, mostly steering and suspension - none life-threatening or catastrophic, and all covered under the warranty, but annoying nonetheless. Also, numerous problems with the restraint system, brakes, audio system, and door locks. Needless to say, I am a familiar face at the dealership! Other negatives: fuel consumption is poor, but that is the nature of the beast. 2nd row legroom is poor given the size of the vehicle. Interior storage compartments are lacking. Seats are not the most comfortable on long drives. It is easy to accidentally hit the paddle shifters on the steering wheel, which results in knocking the car into 1st gear (D1) - not a good thing! Anyway, the only basis I could recommend the GL 450 is for those for whom the status of owning a Mercedes is important - otherwise, I think there are many more wise choices out there. You might ask, why do I still drive it? I am locked into a 3-year prepaid lease! Live and learn..

I bought the 2007 GL450 brand at end of 2006. In the very first week, the '4matic' light went on and I had to take it back to dealer to fix it. 6 months later the same problem happened and the dealer fixed it again. Right after warrarnty expiry, the same problem happened again and the dealer said it's no longer under warranty and I had to pay for it. About 2 years after I bough it, the brake light went on, I took to the dealer and I was told not only the bake pads need to be replaced but also the rotary needs to be replaced, and they are not under warranty. Last year, the dirver side air suspension was broken and need to be replaced. This year, the passenger side air suspension had the same issue and need to be replaced, and the steering pump also had to be replaced. This is very bad. Every year costs about $2000 to repair it. The worst car ever made. I asked the dealer why the car had so many problems, I was told that this was relatively new model and do have a lot of problems. Shame on Mercedez!!!
