our expert's take

Vehicle Overview
The Mercury Mountaineer is an upscale twin to the Ford Explorer. It competes against SUVs like the Buick Enclave and Kia Borrego. It’s available in base or Premier trim, with optional four-wheel drive. It seats up to seven people.

New for 2010
The Mountaineer adds a few standard features to the Premier trim, and the navigation system gains Sirius’ Travel Link service. The electronic stability system adds trailer-sway control.

Exterior
Mercury says the front styling and rectangular headlights suggest a subtle evolution in the company’s design direction, with an emphasis on the vertically stacked front-end elements. Premier models add upgraded wheels and aluminum roof rails.

  • 17-, 18- and 20-inch wheels
  • Satin aluminum touches on exterior
  • Available power-retractable running boards
  • Standard black crossbars for roof rails
  • Standard capless fuel filler system

Interior
The Mountaineer can carry five occupants, with an optional third-row seat raising capacity to seven. The Sync communication system integrates phones and media players and allows those devices to be voice-activated. Sirius’ subscription-based Travel Link service, included with the optional navigation system, can pull up local gas prices, movie times, weather reports and sports scores.

  • Optional heated leather seats
  • Second-row seats can be bench or buckets; they recline on the Premier
  • Optional Sync system and satellite radio
  • Optional rear-seat DVD entertainment system with 8-inch video screen
  • Optional navigation system with Sirius Travel Link
  • Optional power-folding third-row seats

Under the Hood
There is a choice between a V-6 or V-8 engine for the Mountaineer.

  • 210-horsepower, 4.0-liter V-6 with 254 pounds-feet of torque
  • 292-hp, 4.6-liter V-8 with 315 pounds-feet of torque
  • Five-speed automatic with V-6; six-speed automatic with V-8
  • Rear- or all-wheel drive
  • Can tow up to 7,055 pounds when properly equipped

Safety
Ford’s AdvanceTrac now incorporates standard trailer-sway control. The system senses when the trailer you’re towing is starting to sway and takes measures to bring it back into line. Other standard features include:

  • Four-wheel-disc antilock brakes
  • Side-impact and side curtain airbags
  • Electronic stability system with Roll Stability Control

So I just bought a used 2010 Mercury Mountaineer, with a restored salvage title. Typically I do not buy vehicles that don’t have a clean title. Obviously this vehicle was in an accident, and restored. I test drove the vehicle twice before deciding to buy it. I have to say there are a few quirks I have to work out of the system, but the engine and transmission is solid! With just over 100k miles this vehicle is by far one of the cleanest vehicles I have ever bought used, inside and out. I upgraded from an 03 Ford Ranger that had the 2.3L engine 5 speed manual. I wanted something automatic and with more HP. The Mountaineer doesn’t disappoint. For $4,500 I feel this vehicle was a smart purchase even if I have to put some time and money into fixing the weird quirks. I wish there was a way to submit pictures in this review to show just how clean this vehicle is. I would not hesitate on buying another one.

  • Great SUV

The 4.0V6 does feel underpowered a little but the overall feel of the SUV is amazing! it handles the road like a sports car and has only a little body roll when it is pushed in the corners. The interior room and storage is incredible and has a great sound system

  • Great LX Truck

This truck is definitely on the high end as far as luxury but the 4.7 Liter V8 is a complete beast. I've been very happy with the comfort of this truck.

  • Renting to Owning

It started out as a lease but we loved it so much that when it came to the end of it we just had to have it. Before this truck we had a Gmc envoy xl but it had so many problems that when it came to getting a new american suv we had to lease it so we could test it out. And after 5 long years with this truck, me and my husband knew that it was the perfect fit for our family. We have 3 kids so this suv is the perfect fit for us. Not to mention how luxurious it is. We got the luxury trim level which came with standard leather seats and a rear dvd player which is perfect for the kids and sirus xm radio which I love. And the third row is perfect for those long car rides. Gas mileage isn't that great but we got the V8 so we really wasn't concerned about saving money on gas. The truck drives so smooth and the transmission shifts with no problem and it has a lot of power. I am looking forward to many more years with this truck because it truly is the perfect family suv in my book.
