Expert 2006 Scion xB review

our expert's take
Our expert's take

our expert's take

My wife laughed when I pulled a white Scion xB into the driveway. “That looks like a bread truck,” she said.

But when she climbed inside, her laugh softened to a smile. The cabin was so much bigger than she expected, and the sticker price was a surprising $16,260. It was then that her “Give-A-Care Meter” went up visibly.

By the time we folded the back seat and loaded the cargo hold with boxes, we were both thoroughly smitten with this little box. Not only does the xB hold a lot of stuff, considering that its wheelbase is barely longer than a Mini Cooper’s, but it drives nicely and handles like a small sedan, not a baby UPS truck.

The xB is an amazing vehicle for the money when you consider that standard air conditioning, power windows, AM/FM stereo, tilt wheel, keyless remote, anti-lock brakes, traction control, brake assist and vehicle stability control are standard equipment. It is a good value as well as a packaging success.

Scion calls the xB an urban utility vehicle, and that’s a good description. The Scion is Toyota’s youth brand, and the xB is targeted at youth who want a vehicle that is not only a private space on wheels but also one that is radically different from the mainstream. Thus, the box.

With the xB, however, Toyota has created a vehicle concept that transcends age. This little box also holds a fascination for baby boomers who want a practical, economical and inexpensive vehicle that is the functional equivalent of a minivan. Compared to a minivan, the xB is the automotive equivalent of “Honey, I Shrunk the Kids.”

The 1.5-liter, four-cylinder engine’s 103 horsepower felt stronger than I expected, and while it won’t win any stoplight drag races, it moves out with reasonable alacrity. Fuel economy is rated at 30 miles per gallon in the city and 35 on the highway. Highway mileage would surely be higher if the shape weren’t so blunt, but the xB is a city car at heart and a practical car in function.

The instrument panel has the speedometer located at the base of the windshield near the center of the dash. It’s not far from the driver’s line of sight and adjusting to it is easy. The stereo has control buttons on the steering wheel, but many functions still have to be done by hand.

The upgraded stereo has a built-in jack for an iPod, which can be controlled by the radio’s buttons. Scrolling through playlists is not as easy as it could be because the right-side knob is pretty far from the driver. Sound quality is good but not overwhelming.

The seats are tall and upright, like dining room chairs. That’s why it is possible to cram four of them into such a short vehicle and still have plenty of legroom, especially rear-seat legroom.

The front seats have great lateral support, and the dash is far away, so that the cabin feels incredibly spacious. Headroom is generous, but that’s never an issue for me because I’m only 5-foot-8 on a good day.

The rear seat back folds forward to create a flat load floor. Small storage bins are located under the rear floor. The Scion would be even more versatile if the front passenger seat folded flat to make one long hauling space.

Side airbags are not available, and should be for a vehicle of this size.

A special edition xB has a rear-seat entertainment center with LCD screens mounted in the back of each front headrest.

Price
The base price of an xB with automatic transmission is $14,830. The test car had cargo and floor mats, upgraded stereo with iPod jack, rear spoiler and an armrest. The sticker price was $16,260.

Warranty
Three years or 36,000 miles.

Engine: 1.5-liter, 103-hp 4-cyl.

Transmission: automatic

Front-wheel drive

Wheelbase: 98.4 inches

Curb weight: 2,470 lbs.

Base price: $14,830

As driven: $16,260

Mpg rating: 30 city, 35 hwy.

At A Glance

Point: The xB is a terrific vehicle for the price. It is small yet spacious, has distinctive styling and drives like a small sedan. The interior has plenty of leg-room and the back seat folds for hauling.

Counterpoint: Side airbags should be available, if not standard. Operating an iPod with the right-side knob of the stereo could be easier.

  • I see another reviewer here bought their xB in 2006 as

I see another reviewer here bought their xB in 2006 as well. This has been a very reliable car for me. I want get all the maintenance issues out of the way first. I have had to replace the camshaft gears, the blower motor fan for the A/C 6 times, the catalytic converter twice, ingnition coils, front windshield 3 times (one time reimbursed through Scion owner settlement), water pump, starter, and cold air intake system. Those were the most significant, and expected after 19 years of ownership. I have seen on other sights that the car burns oil, and as my car got older, it does. I have to replace oil usually twice in between oil changes. The only 2 issues I have not addressed is the front end suspension and the audio system. It was never the smoothest riding vehicle from the beginning, but now the MacPherson struts are shot making for a rough ride over the smallest bumps in the road. If anyone has ever ridden surface streets in and around downtown Atlanta, they can attest to the rough streets and the wear and tear down to your vehicle. The factory radio speakers are blown. They didn't do well at high volumes. I still can listen to music with little bass at moderate volumes--works for me. However, after all that, the maintenance for my Scion has been spaced out and reasonably priced. From the first oil change, I decided to take this vehicle to the dealership for repairs, however I highly recommend relying upon your own maintenance preferences. With some costly repairs, I reached out to other mechanics. Back to the Scion...other than the usual oil change, wiper blade changes, filter changes, brake repair, and tire replacements, the overall maintenance cost in a yearly basis is low. I enjoy the gas mileage, the interior room (although I would like more driver legroom), the lasting CD player, the lasting hydraulics for the rear door (showing my age), maneuverability, engine power at lower speeds, and slow depreciation over the years. This car has been the longest lasting car I've ever had and has outlasted cars of friends, coworkers, and family.

  • I bought my 2006 Scion XB in 2006.

I bought my 2006 Scion XB in 2006. My car was the best car I have ever owned. You sit up off the floor, not like most compact cars where you practically lay on the floor. In addition, the head room and backseat leg room is fantastic! We changed the oil every 3,000 miles. It did not burn oil or drip oil. It never required any repairs except oil changes, brakes and tires. The only repair other than maintenance that had to be done was in 2023 we needed to replace the radiator. I would still have this car but a buck literally ran into my car totalling it. I was sick! I have tried to get another one but can't seem to find one that had been taken care of like mine. If you find one of these models...buy it. It is a Gem.

  • My 2006 Scion xB is the energizer bunny of small suv-type

My 2006 Scion xB is the energizer bunny of small suv-type vehicles. I paid cash for it and now, 18 years later, it is still going strong. No major repairs needed, but some of its good looks need a little facelift. It's taken me all over the state and never let me down. Why can't they keep making a car of this quality??? I will drive my little box til the wheels fall off.

  • I've had my 2006 xb for about 3 years now.

I've had my 2006 xb for about 3 years now. It was a quick fix while I purchased a home instead of a car. Currently holding strong at 175,000. Can't believe I made fun of it when I first saw them back in 2006. Wish I'd invested in a few of these awesome cars.

  • Amazing car

This car has served me well for 16 yrs., however with 250K miles the check engine light stays on & mechanic's are saying NO fix. So I'm dumping it for a Kia Soul, now to see "IF" I can get same quality service from this car. Sad Toyota chose to discontinue this style car & support to keep it running.

  • Best EVER Car I'm 72. EVER.

A friend laughed at my "toaster". He's a BIG GUY. Owns a GMC 2500 He got in the back seat when we went to dinner. I watched him looking around. Told me there was more room in my car than his truck He never called it a toaster again. And if you like to go around sharp curves in a toaster? Do it. You'll go through tires quickly. The tires aren't happy when you do 70 around a 30 curve. But it's FUN! And the car will do it, every time 146,000 so far. 32-38 MPG Put a 9 foot 6 inch propeller shaft INSIDE THE CAR windows up. A forever car.

370k miles and still going strong. No major mechanical issues. Regular maintenance has kept it going strong. No blind spots for visibility. Lots of passenger room. Minimal cargo space but if you are creative you can cram a lot in there.

  • Very reliable and strong at 345k miles

The interior is very roomy for its size and suitable for a family of 5. My xB currently has 345k miles and uses no oil and does not smoke or make any noise. I'm very impressed with its reliability as I drive the vehicle 80 miles a day for work. This xB is extremely inexpensive and shares the same motor as the Prius. 2006 and prior year models are known to last 300k plus miles. My last xB showed 450k miles when I sold it to a friend who now has over 500k miles on it! This vehicle is not a performance model, but will get you where you need to go (so long as you are not in a hurry). I'd recommend this model to any person or small family looking for a reliable and economic mode of transportation.
