Scion xB
In 2003, Toyota launched Scion, a youth-focused division aimed at appealing to young, urban drivers. Scion was designed to offer unique, customizable vehicles that would stand out from Toyota’s more mainstream models. The brand’s marketing and retail strategy was also tailored to attract younger buyers, with an emphasis on personalization and an off-beat approach. The Scion xB — a subcompact four-door wagon with aggressively boxy, upright body proportions — was introduced for 2004. It quickly became Scion’s bestselling model, outselling its more conventionally shaped stablemate, the xA hatchback. After taking the 2007 model year off, the xB was redesigned for 2008 on a larger compact-car platform. By the middle of the 2010s, the Scion brand didn’t feel as fresh or cutting-edge, and Toyota decided the nameplate had run its course. The xB was discontinued after the 2015 model year, and the Scion division itself was shuttered after 2016.
