The Volvo XC60 Recharge offers quick acceleration, decent space for passengers and cargo, and solid towing capacity for a compact plug-in hybrid SUV, but the 2021 model’s all-electric range of 18 miles left our editors wishing for more. A fix for 2022 is coming: Volvo announced the XC60 Recharge and its larger XC90 Recharge sibling will get significant improvements to their all-electric range thanks to a new battery. Other upgrades include increased power and improved all-wheel-drive capability.

Related: 2021 Volvo XC60 Recharge Review: Plug-In Hybrid Pass/Fail

The new battery won’t be limited to the XC60 and XC90, either. Volvo says all of its 60 and 90 Series models will get the new powertrain, including the S60 and S90 sedans, V60 wagon, and Polestar Engineered variants of the V60 and XC60.

It Goes Farther on Electricity Alone

Thanks to a new long-range battery, the 2022 XC60 Recharge will get an EPA-estimated all-electric range of up to 35 miles. According to Volvo, maximum range can be achieved when the vehicle is driven in Pure mode; this requires the battery to be sufficiently charged, the vehicle speed to stay below 88 mph and avoiding system limitations like cold temperatures.

The XC90 Recharge’s all-electric range is also boosted to 35 miles. The increased all-electric range means the SUVs are more likely to accommodate the number of daily miles average drivers travel, which ranged from 30-40 miles per day as of 2017, according to the Department of Energy.

Volvo says the XC60 Recharge’s combined EPA-estimated fuel economy is up slightly from 27 to 28 mpg, and its mpg-equivalent climbs from 57 to 63 mpg-e. Charging the SUV’s battery from 5% to a full charge takes between three and four hours with 3.6-kilowatt AC fast charging and six to eight hours with a standard 110-volt connector.

More Power in the Back

The 2022 XC60 Recharge is powered by a supercharged and turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with a 143-horsepower rear electric motor for a combined system output of 455 hp, both improvements over the 2021 model’s 87-hp rear motor and 400 hp (415 hp in Polestar Engineered guise). Volvo says the upgraded motor will improve the vehicle’s AWD effectiveness, allowing for improved towing capability and better stability in inclement weather.

One-Pedal Driving Added

In addition to range and efficiency gains, the 2022 Volvo XC60 Recharge also adds one-pedal driving that was previously only available on all-electric Volvos. The feature allows the driver to control acceleration and deceleration with the accelerator pedal.

Pricing and Tax Credits

The 2022 Volvo XC60 Recharge starts at $55,345, and the larger XC90 Recharge starts at $65,895 (all prices include the $1,095 destination fee). Both extended-range models are eligible for the full $7,500 federal tax credit.

  • I have owned 2 Volvo's and both have been amazing

I have owned 2 Volvo's and both have been amazing including the 22 XC60 PHEV. I once had to wait for a part for longer than I would have liked but I was in a service loaner that was an upgrade to my car so I'm not really complaining. Overall, the car is quick, great on gas when I'm not using Electric daily. It's comfortable, great to look at, it can tow small boats/campers and is great for a small family/couple. I couldn't have been happier, it was just what I needed before going all the way EV.

  • Hybrid battery & cooling system with Battery Module

Hybrid battery & cooling system with Battery Module control panel BURNS if u do long distance driving. Software updates are trash keeping the car malfunctioning. Car gets overheated in summer very often it makes whole tablet system on glitch, camera doesnt work too. Volvo corporate service is absolute garbage. they rely on dealership's policy to give loaner car or rental car to you when it's in service.

  • Volvo Assist Essential

I have had to call Volvo assist 8 times in 12 months as the 12 volt battery keeps failing at no notice leaving car dead. Volvo keep telling me I don’t drive the car far enough to keep the battery charged, but three times it had failed same day or next day after 120 kilometre journey. Annoyingly Volvo keep suggesting it is me causing this problem. Love the car, hate the problems.

  • 2023 Recharge T8, year old now. Love the car.

Infotainment wasn't ready when I purchased the car. After approx 5 software updates in the first three months (mostly at the dealer), the car has been flawless. I now enjoy the Google interface very much, and love the car. I regularly get 45 miles e-range on easy highway drive, perfect for my commute. My car doesn't have air suspension, so the ride is arguably too firm for concrete pavement I have in my area. Could also be because of the curb rash-prone 20 inch wheels, I would choose an 18" wheel instead. Car materials and fit/finish are just superb, makes you feel special. It also makes driving my second car a chore :)

  • Run away from this software debacle

Drives and mechanically great car but software if horrendous and needs major improvements. Problems one after another keep our car in the shop over and over and will keep us from buying another volvo which is unfortunate as we love the car except the software that seems to be thrown together by cut rate software engineers.

  • Premium comfort with half-baked infotainment

The most comfortable car I’ve probably ever sat in. All the safety features you’d want from a Volvo. Good power and ok efficiency from the battery, but we knew that was limited when we bought it based on the specs. Still good enough for a short daily commute. But the onboard computer is a mess. We’ve spent over a year having it replaced, rebooted, rewhatever to no avail. It freezes, locks out profiles, forgets settings, sometimes changes the HUD, doesn’t pair with phone on restarts, etc. It was in the shop for weeks for this, waiting for an “expert,” and eventually came back with little or no explanation or improvement. Really downgrades our experience too often.

  • XC60 Extended Range positive so far

Interesting to read the good and bad about XC60 Recharge Volvos. I have a 2022 extended range Inscription purchased May 2022 with 8,400 miles. To date it has been perfect. Three over the air software upgrades thus far. Everything works good including the Google info system. Dashboard mapping excellent. Bowers and Wilkins stereo great. It typically charges to 39 or 40 miles. All in town driving via EV. It’s a bit of a bother, but I’ve been able to average as high as 39 mpg on a 400 trip massaging the drive modes. Made a 600 mile one day trip to Vegas last year no problem with one gas stop. Plug-in cars are the way to go on long trips as EV charging woes continue (except Tesla). Very comfortable highly adjustable seats. Nice to have first three years of service prepaid. Stick it in power mode and it’s very quick. No wireless Car Play, but I’ve been OK with Google system plugging in Car Play if needed. There aren’t many plug-ins with this sort of range available which made it a good choice. Long positive history with Volvos.

  • Just don’t

The car is gorgeous and so fun to drive but after a week we had to take it in for the Google (which still doesn’t always work). Then the keyfobs weren’t connecting with the car and just problem after problem. The biggest now is there’s absolutely NO heat in pure(electric) mode or hybrid. There’s a defective part that needs to be replaced and Volvo has no word when it will be in. You can get heat in power mode, if the engine runs a while but that defeats the purpose of having it for electric. A few other annoying things, no place to hold sunglasses, the sun visor is horrible at blocking sun and after FINALLY getting Apple CarPlay, your phone has to always be plugged in, in order to use the CarPlay. For $67,000+ you’d think it would be a little better. I really honestly love the look and how fast the car is but all these problems aren’t worth it.

  • They Tried

While Volvo has an excellent reputation — mainly for amazing safety and engineering. I wanted an all electric vehicle and after a year of test driving and study determined it was perhaps too soon in the industries evolution. (To not spend $100,000!) I was excited to learn of the recharge and waited for an XC60. From the beginning there were issues. Computer issues that meant my car beeped for a day and a half because the cameras went wonky. Required a visit (40 miles). A couple other computer issues arose early and were mostly over until yesterday when nothing happened. Not a single flicker of a light on the dash. Can’t even get the hatch open. Moving away from technology; the air-conditioned seats are nice yet wimpy compared to other manufacturers. The ‘infotainment’ center is clumsy and complicated to use — especially when NOT parked! The cover for the hatchback stays in place well after a prayer but only on the third Tuesday. Simple thing that just doesn’t work! Lastly — just getting an appointment at the dealer is a waiting game. Getting a tow from the company required several phone calls and was later than promised.

  • Flawed but pretty

Had the XC60 Recharge for 2 months and 3000 miles. It’s beautifully finished and a great looking car. The concept is excellent but the execution is appalling. After leaving the car at the airport for 5 days the 12v battery was completely discharged. Had to call Volvo to be rescued. The dealership blamed the operating system software which tried to do an update and discharged the vehicle whilst locked. The primary display has the annoying habit of regularly corrupting itself, needing a restart. The climate control has issues and the camera system is unreliable. I had three Jeeps before this without a single issue. If this unreliability continues I will be selling it on unless the issues qualify for Lemon Law help. Very very disappointed.
