My First Time Shopping For and Buying a Car Ever!
December 3, 2018
My family and I had just moved to Durango from Las Vegas and we live 17 miles up the mountain, away from the actual town, so we absolutely needed a car to get us out of this house before we all became secluded mountain people with beards. I had never even shopped for a car before and the thought of it stressed me out immensely! In the meantime, we were renting a car from a company that also sells cars, but I had to view their inventory online and then drive to New Mexico if I found one I liked. I spent an entire day looking at their website and it only stressed me out more when I couldn't find a single car that fit my needs or budget. I had seen Durango Auto Value on our trips to the store, and one day as we were passing by, I mentioned to my husband that this looked like the place for us: it has "Value" in the name, there's a mobile home type office, and a dirt parking lot, just the right kind of shady! This being my first time, I was so scared of getting ripped off by a car salesman in an orange and green striped suit. I was nervous about going to Durango Value Auto because it seemed too easy, like I might find something that fits my budget, but the minute I drive off the lot, the motor might fall out, but it would be "your problem now" type deal. One day, as we were about to return our rental, my husband turned into the Durango Motor Company parking lot "just to see what we find and what they can do for us". We walked around the huge parking lot, but everything was way out of our budget. I suggested going inside and talking to someone about how this process works. We were met by a man with a British accent, who seemed sceptical about how serious we were. I was nervous, and I can't help it, I tend to make stupid jokes and giggle too much when I'm uncomfortable, and this man was straight faced, no nonsense. It's a good way to be I suppose when you're dealing with lots of money and lots of vehicles, but it made me feel like I had been sent to the principal's office. We explained our situation and he didn't bat an eyelash as he told us we would want to go to their high mileage lot, Durango Auto Value, just down the way. My jaw hit the table. "You guys OWN Durango Auto Value?!?! It's legit?!?!" He informed me it was the same company, only high mileage vehicles, and he was going to call Michael to inform him we were coming. We drove over and start walking around the lot, getting an idea of the inventory. One of the employees came over to us and we introduced ourselves and started to explain our story. He mentioned that he's from Oakland and since I'm from San Francisco, it was a sign from above that we were in the right place. His name was Beijan Afshar and he was so cool, I immediately felt more at ease and comfortable. He said that he isn't the greasy cars salesman, we can't lower the price, he can't increase the price, he is simply there to help us find the right car for us. We took a test drive and this guy has jokes!!! Jokes and jokes, and as I said earlier, I crack jokes when I'm nervous, and this guy had me cracking up! I immediately felt so much better and more comfortable with this crazy process, and it's all thanks to Beijan! Seriously, this guy has a natural nack of putting the customer at ease. If he doesn't make it in the car business, he can fall back on a career as a stand up comedian. So, we found the perfect car! I had been wishing for a Toyota, but during my research, I was beginning to believe that I should keep dreaming and settle for what I could afford. But I got a Toyota!!! And it's a 4 wheel drive, something I was told by locals is a necessary thing if you're gonna live in Durango. Beijan restored my faith in humanity. I wasn't dealing with a salesman, it was like my buddy helped me out. He even gave my 4 year old an ice cream! Give this kid a raise!!
