Despite mid-size sedans losing their cool factor with shoppers, many automakers are trying to keep the flame alive by rolling out refreshed or redesigned versions. Kia’s contribution to the preservation effort, the Optima, got mildly freshened styling, additional standard safety features that were previously optional and a restructured multimedia system for 2019.

Many of the biggest additions for the new model year center on safety features. Newly standard features for 2019 include forward collision avoidance assist, which will automatically apply the brakes to reduce speed if a collision is imminent. Also standard is a driver attention warning system that monitors the driver’s behavior and will send visual and audible alerts if it senses a reduction in the attention level of the person behind the wheel. Lastly, lane departure warning with lane keep assist alerts the driver if the car shifts out of the lane and then automatically corrects the steering.
