BMW is recalling more than 40,700 examples of its X3 SUV due to malfunctioning rear door locks that may unlock and cause the doors to open unexpectedly.

Affected vehicles include model-year 2022-24 X3 sDrive30i and xDrive30i SUVs. The recall addresses a safety issue where the rear door-locking modules may not function properly, allowing the doors to be unlocked with a single motion. Doors that can be inadvertently unlocked and unlatched may open unexpectedly, increasing the risk of injury to rear-seat occupants.

To fix the issue, dealers will replace the rear door-locking modules for free. BMW will begin notifying owners April 14, but those with further questions can contact BMW customer service at 800-525-7417, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236, or visit its website to check their vehicle identification number and learn more.
