Just days following its last big one for Escapes, Ford has issued its fourth major recall of the month for more than 252,900 Explorers and Police Interceptor Utility vehicles over a driveshaft disconnect that could result in a rollaway.
Affected SUVs include model-year 2020-22 Explorer and Police Interceptor Utility vehicles. The rear-axle horizontal mounting bolt may fracture and cause the driveshaft to disconnect, potentially resulting in a rollaway when the vehicle is placed in Park without the parking brake applied, increasing the risk of a crash.
Depending on the vehicle, dealers will replace the bushing and axle cover or update the electronic parking brake software; either way, the fix will be done for free. Ford will begin notifying owners June 6, but those with further questions can call the automaker at 866-436-7332 (Ford’s number for this recall is 22S27), the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236, or visit its website to check your vehicle identification number and learn more.
