Expert 2011 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Hybrid review

Our expert's take
By Cars.com editors
Full article

Vehicle Overview

The Chevrolet Silverado Hybrid is a half-ton pickup that achieves better overall fuel economy than a gas-powered Silverado, but it can still pull a 6,100-pound trailer. Available exclusively in the crew-cab body style, the Silverado Hybrid is expected to use one-quarter less gas than a regular Silverado.

New for 2011
The Silverado Hybrid gets GM’s OnStar 9.0 telematics system that GM says provides better voice recognition. GM also said they have worked to cut down on the amount of wind noise occupants hear.

Exterior
In passing, the Silverado Hybrid doesn’t look much different from its gas-only sibling. Hybrid badges on the front fenders and the tailgate are standard. Exterior features include:

  • Low-rolling-resistance tires
  • 18-inch wheels
  • Deeper front air dam than regular Silverado
  • Standard tonneau cover

Interior
Depending on the Silverado Hybrid’s seating configuration, the crew cab can seat five or six people.  Interior features include:

  • Gauge tracks optimal fuel economy
  • Hybrid badge on tachometer
  • Optional navigation system

Under the Hood
The Silverado Hybrid’s 6.0-liter V-8 teams with GM’s Electrically Variable Transmission, which integrates two electric motors into the transmission housing. Those motors are powered by a 300-volt hybrid battery pack under the backseat. With this system, the truck can accelerate on electric power alone like the Toyota Prius and other hybrids.

The rear-wheel-drive Silverado Hybrid can tow up to 6,100 pounds, while the four-wheel-drive model can pull 5,900 pounds. Both figures trail the maximum ratings of the regular crew cab by significant margins (more than 10,000 pounds).

Additional energy-saving measures include:

  • Cylinder deactivation
  • Regenerative braking

Safety
Standard safety features include:

  • Antilock brakes
  • Electronic stability system
  • Side curtain airbags

I bought this truck used in 2016 and refuse...REFUSE...to sell or trade it. Best vehicle I've EVER owned. I usually would trade a care every few years but this truck? It's a long term keeper.

  • Car was returned to dealer by the bank

The vehicle was great, It's a shame that Kap Auto Sales is so dishonest. That got my loan fraudulently and increased the selling price by 2400 dollars. Total Crooks

For the money and year this was a very good buy, it is a very sound truck, they had a brand new set of tires and they were willing to change them out if we didn't like them

  • The Good The Bad & The Ugly

The good: This truck is smooth operating and very quite. The seats are comfortable and every thing is easy to reach. Except the traction control override button. The Bad: Traction control that doesn't understand that this is a 4x4. Cuts power at the worst time possible and the hybrid tires make it worse. In deep snow and mud the truck cuts power and applies the breaks because the tires slip. The truck is in 4x4 mode some engineer needs to figure out what that means. Pressing the traction control off button only works if the tires don't slip again. When you have leaned to the center of the truck and taken your eyes off the slippery muddy road to hit the button the first time. you have to do it all over again and this time hold the button down for a longer time so hat you see the line go through the traction control symbol on the dash. Yes this means your eyes are off the road again. The Ugly: The power management system will not allow high power draws using the cigarette lighter socket. In cold weather the 12volt battery drains and freezes if the truck sits for more than a few days. The dealer said it happens to all the hybrids they see. Over all the truck works well the hybrid is smooth. The electric whine is not overly loud. The truck is easy to drive with good visibility and large mirrors. The auto temperature control is a great feature. Auto 4x4 works well and keeps you going when the truck sinks in what looked like a dry spot but don't let the wheels slip.

  • Just bought a 2011 Silverado Hybrid 4x4 yesterday

But I went from 13.56mpg on 50/50 City/Hwy (in a '03 Silverado V6 RWD) to 22.12mpg on that same ratio. This truck has xxxxx when needed, and all kinds of safety features to boot. Leather seats, touch screen nav/radio, and a sweet tonneau cover. LOVE THIS TRUCK!!

  • Hybrid is almost Perfect

First of all, I am a big guy, so having a full size truck that gets 20MPG City is a something to cheer about. What I don't like is the foot pedal for putting power to the electric motor at low speeds (Below 30MPH). Tough to do, engine keeps starting with the slightest pressure to increase speed or go up a gradual high spot in the road. Once you get use to the auto stop/start then you settle down to enjoying the truck. Quite smooth ride. MPG average drops in the mountains, but I still love the power and handling. Great truck and operates as advertised.
