Vehicle Overview
While mechanically identical to the Chevrolet Silverado heavy-duty models, GMC positions the Sierra 2500HD/3500HD to appeal to a more upscale customer. There’s a little more flash on the outside and a little more elegance on the inside. But the real selling point for the Sierra is the same as the Silverado: the combination of a Duramax diesel and Allison six-speed automatic transmission.

The Sierra 2500 heavy-duty trucks come in Work Truck, SLE and SLT trims and are available in the following configurations: regular cab long bed, extended cab standard bed, extended cab long bed and crew cab long bed. The 3500 models come with only the long bed, but dual-rear-wheel versions are available. All HD trucks can be ordered in two- or four-wheel-drive. The standard powertrain is a 6.0-liter gas engine and six-speed Hydra-Matic automatic transmission, while the diesel is optional. GM says the 2500HD and 3500HD can tow up to 13,000 pounds with the diesel engine and a conventional hitch. The maximum towing capacity with a fifth-wheel hitch is 16,700 pounds; payload varies between 2,331 pounds and 5,309 pounds, depending on the model.

New for 2009
OnStar now comes with Turn-by-Turn Navigation and Destination Download. Bluetooth is also added, and XM Satellite Radio is enhanced with a NavTraffic feature. To help drivers with hitching trailers or spotting obstacles behind them, the Sierra HD offers a rearview camera system.

Exterior
The Sierra heavy-duty trucks are visually distinct from their Chevy cousins and Sierra 1500 models. The grille opening is more pronounced, and the headlamps and hood are different. GMC has made noticeable improvements in the overall fit and finish of the body panels; tolerances are closer, and there’s less space between the cab and cargo box for a smoother design. Even the dually has integrated, hydroformed steel fenders. Fog lamps on the SLT models are set into the bumper for an upscale appearance.

Exterior features include:

  • All models have chrome bumpers
  • Available moonroof on extended and crew cabs
  • Available EZ Lift tailgate
  • Tow mirrors available
  • Side, roof markers on dually models

Interior
The GMC interior themes found on the Sierra 1500 carry over to the heavy-duty models. The Work Truck and SLE trims feature more work details, while the SLT is more luxurious. The most obvious difference is the dash design. The Work Truck has a double glove box and the SLT has a single glove box. The Work Truck has armrest storage built into the 40/20/40-split bench seat, and there’s also a lockable storage bin large enough for a laptop under the center-seat section. Premium interiors have a large center console with 20.1 liters of undivided storage. GMC offers a wide range of audio options with a Bose sound system available in premium models.

  • LED-lit analog gauges
  • Available rear-seat DVD player
  • Power-adjustable foot pedals
  • Available power rear window on extended and crew cabs
  • Stadium-style seating in second row

Under the Hood

  • 360-horsepower, 6.0-liter V-8, with iron block and aluminum cylinder head, cam-in-block, two valves per cylinder, making 380 pounds-feet of peak torque mated to a six-speed Hydra-Matic automatic transmission
  • 365-hp, 6.6-liter V-8 diesel, with iron block and aluminum cylinder head, cam-in-block, four valves per cylinder, making 660 pounds-feet of peak torque mated to a six-speed Allison automatic transmission

Safety
The story here is what’s missing, not what’s available. GM’s electronic stability control system, StabiliTrak, is available only on select 2500HD models. Also, side-impact and side curtain airbags are not available. Other safety features include:

  • Dual front airbags standard
  • OnStar gets Turn-by-Turn Navigation
  • Ultrasonic rear parking assist available
  • Four-wheel antilock brakes

Of Interest to Truck Owners

  • Maximum gross vehicle weight rating: 9,200 pounds (all models)
  • Maximum payload capacity: 3,924 pounds (regular cab 4×2, 6.0-liter V-8)
  • Maximum towing capacity: 13,000 pounds (regular, extended and crew cabs, 6.6-liter V-8)
  • Fuel tank capacity: 26 gallons (with 6.5-foot bed)
  • Minimum ground clearance: 9.5 inches

  • Never own GMC again’

Have had nothing but issues. Two different GMC dealerships spent over 3K and heat still blows out AC on passenger side. Have replaced headlights about every year. Bother batteries need replacing about every three years. Replaced the center top three times cracks and need replacing about every three years. Seat material recently failed and now the yellow cushion is seen. The dials on radio and AC rubbed off after two years replaced at 10 years hoping it would fix AC heat problems. 4X4 issues. The carpet in the middle front have worn through. Overall for a 60K truck not impressed. Especially because this was a second car for the past 10 years and always garage kept. Would NEVER own another GMC!

  • GREAT VALUE

This truck has performed year after year delivering product and plowing snow with very little down time. We purchased the truck new and have maintained for 10 years.

This truck met my expectations. Ample room in front seats and rear. Plenty of room for family of five. The tonneau cover was great to haul luggage and other items while keeping them dry. Locking tailgate added security.

  • Very low mileage for year.

Appears to be very well maintained by previous owner. Have been looking for a good used truck and found this one so made the purchase immediately.

  • Sierra 2500HD Z71

This truck is a tank and that's what a truck needs to be. It is not something to go to the grocery store but if you want to pull a tree stump this is the truck. The turn radius for the crew cab if fairly large but I would expect that. It's durable and I think far superior to its counterparts from Ford or Dodge. The 6.0L gas has tons of torque and open road horsepower. I will buy GMC or Chevy from here on. I was a Ford pilot but after getting this truck I won't even consider another Ford.

  • Loving this truck! Hauls everything I need it to.

Love this truck! The truck I've got is the 6.6L diesel which has plenty of power for whatever your hauling. I haul construction equipment (skid steer, mini excavator, ect)on a regular basis. Interior is comfortable and the SLT trim package is great. I would like to see more specific features for paper work/files/superintendent purpose.

  • Best truck I've driven/owned

I've experienced all other forms and lines of trucks and this by far has been very satisfactory for my work use and getting around as well to my lifestyle. It's also the quietest diesel truck I've ever driven. Rides as comfortable as a luxury even with owning a BMW.

  • I Love This Truck

I drove every new fullsize truck when I went shopping for a new pickup. I would now have to say that I would have no reservation in recommending this truck to anyone. In early 2009, I purchased a current year GMC Sierra Z71 CC 4x4 with the 5.3L / 6spd auto combo and have used it as a daily driver for work and play since then. The truck has performed brilliantly since my purchase and my only out of pocket expenses has been routine scheduled maintenance. Fuel economy has been better than what I had hoped for out of a full size truck coming in at just over 19mpg combined with light trailer towing from time-to-time. The 4x4 with auto trac gets me through the snow and mountains passes that I regularly travel without incident and with confidence. The comfort of this truck is impressive. However, I do wish this truck had a driver side pull handle as well as dedicated overhead console storage for sunglasses. Other than that, I have no complaints. I get a lot of compliments on this truck and I would buy it again.

  • comfortable and solid durable truck

Great value for the money. I haul shingles and home construction material. In winter I push snow and truck has taken the punishment and still runs and looks like new. I will recommend this GMC pickup over any foreign one. I have driven and used lots of different trucks and this one is the best.
