Everything a car should be: utilitarian, indestructible, surprisingly capable. Efficiency goes from good to fantastic with careful driving. I don't see why people complain about performance when this beast will hit 100 mph without complaint (I never do, however; I want to be driving this thing decades from now). I've brought mine through some rough terrain and yet, 164,000 miles into the mission, it hasn't missed a beat. All of my friends are sick of me explaining why my car is superior to every other despite being over a decade old.

I have owned two 2001 Honda CR-V's. After a deer totaled me out in the first one we looked at other vehicles, but bumped into one that had just been traded in and figured why waste time learning the features of a new vehicle when we were perfectly happy with the first one. Our first CR-V was a 2WD. It got about 2 more mpg than the 4WD. The one we have now gets 24.5 mpg Hwy. It's also great on tires. We're pushing 50k and could easily make 60k on the set that's on it now. I'd buy another one, but the newest model seems smaller than those built before 2006.

Just thought some people would like to know how the 2001 CR-V fares with use. Mine now has 85K miles on it and it is doing very well. Zero parts replaced except front brake pads (by me). The car is fun to drive around town and will do 80 all day on the highway. It has very good, quick handling and has a solid feel. Now the only things I will pick on, in case the Honda engineers are reading this. The operation of the auto trans with the cruise control is quirky. When driving normally and climbing a grade on the highway the transmission comes out of overdrive and into 3rd gear nicely. But when the cruise is on it downshifts to 2nd gear and roars up to 4000+ RPMs or more! It sounds like the engine will blow up. Bad design there! Other times the transmission seems to stay in 2nd gear longer than it should. The only other thing that bugs me is that it tends to be noisy at highway speeds. This is not engine noise, it is tire noise coming from the front wheel wells as if more noise insulation would help. We have to crank up the radio to hear it over 65 mph. We have changed tires but the problem persists. The mileage is not all that great for a 4 cylinder: about 20 around town and 22-24 on the highway. I recomend it for mostly flat driving. If you live in a very hilly area get something with a bit more power if you haul any weight with you. We intend to keep our CR-V a long time. It still looks and drives like new at 6 years old. I trust this car to start every day and take me wherever I want to go. In 7 years of ownership it's NEVER been in the shop. At 105,000 miles, it's on its second set of tires and brake pads in front and that's it. Change the oil, treat it with some respect and this car will return the favor. Plus, it's so easy to get in and out of, has an upright seating position and a decent sound system, and has a lot of its value remaining. What more could you ask of a car?? I just wish they would offer this car in diesel.

I love my 2001 CRV, it is just the right size, good on gas, 4 wheel drive. If I was to buy another new car, I would buy another CRV. The only trouble we have had is both driver's door window motors are not working, so they'll have to be fixed, but it is 7 yrs. ols. I drive it to work 35miles each way almost daily, it's been to the ocean several times. We love our CRV!!!
