our expert's take

Probably the most distinctive vehicle on the street today is also the most ambiguous. The Infiniti FX35, a self-proclaimed “premium crossover,” is a car/truck/minivan that endeavors to combine the practicality of a sport utility with the performance of a sports car.

That’s a tall order. But somehow, the FX35 manages to bring together these disparate segments and put them under one curvaceous roof. More or less.

Produced by Infiniti, the luxury division of Nissan, the FX comes with either a 3.5-liter six-cylinder engine or, as the upmarket FX45, with a 4.5-liter V-8. Though it resembles the Nissan Murano in style and purpose, it’s a completely different vehicle.

This is a rear-drive wagon built on a modified chassis from the G35 coupe and sedan, which are widely praised for exceptional road manners. The FX35’s engine is the same muscular V-6 found in the G35 and Nissan 350Z sports car.

The FX is a consistent attention grabber, its bold styling and huge wheels drawing stares and glares. The look is not universally admired, though many who are at first repulsed eventually grow to appreciate it.

But the true test is behind the wheel, where the FX35 is most successful in fulfilling its strange mission.

  • Miss my FX

When the FX35 came out in 2003, I saw it drive by and did a double take. Wow, I loved it. A few years later I bought a used '05 FX35 and was not disappointed at all. I had test driven every mid-size SUV on the market and a few smaller ones and even a few new trucks just to be sure. Nothing compares to this car, not even Acura or Lexus for me. Having driven pickup trucks for many years, I was tired of bouncing around, driving a phone booth and moving everyone's fridge but I did not want a cushy "luxury vehicle" either. Something sporty that handles well, looks good, is bigger and safer than a compact and has enough space to do a decent supply run. Of course, you don't get great mileage, although it did get 27 mph highway and around half of that city. That's fine for me as I don't have a daily commute. It is very comfortable for four people and maybe a kid but it is not for a big family. I like that the FX is powerful and rides smooth, yet you can feel the road and the handling is quite good although I did put a strut tower bar on it just to tighten it up a bit. I also like the interior. It's not particularly fancy but it has nice lines. It is pleasant to look at the dash and there is nothing ugly, cheap or annoying in the styling. I only owned this FX for three years and it did me no wrong. I can't wait to get another FX, or maybe a QX70 will be my pick.

  • Most favorite car to drive that I've owned

This car drives and handles great it has a 3.5 liter engine so plenty of power to get up and go when needed I love the leather interior it's great quality and very comfortable for long rides and is not bad on gas either for a v6.

  • True sports car SUV!!!

First off just let me state I am a true american performance car / musclecar guy, Ive owned tons of camaros Z28s SSs trans ams, ws6s and even 2 new GTOs, so you can bet I know what performance and handling is all about, I was never an import car kinda guy and as for SUVs Ive only ever bought explorers but this SUV has changed me, performance is great 0-60 6.6 secs 280hp and awd I like it alot I bought it used 10 years old and still will keep up with most newer V8 cars if youre looking for a true performance SUV that you can drive anywhere with reliability - after all its really a nissan Murano - on steroids! I was told they have the 350z motor in them and the factory exhaust sound is like nothing else, ride is a bit stiff I have the optional 20" rims but thats all part of the handling package, my overall experience is AA+++ definately get one, styling is very cool although I opted to black out the big chrome grill for a more sporty look, other than that I wouldnt change anything, love the rear reclining seats, ok cargo space wish it had just a little more room in the back but great SUV

  • Never been happier with a vehicle

I looked everywhere for my Infiniti fx35. Every dealer I went to sold them before I could get there. I knew what I wanted so I settled for a 2003 Infiniti fx35. I've never been happier. The interior is nice, very comfortable so it makes a great ride to travel in. Very spacious. The performance is awesome! Fast take off, smooth ride. I have nothing bad to say about it at all. Best investment in a ride!

  • Stand out quitely with this crossover

I remember seeing this car for the first time in a TV ad. I thought...How cool would it be to own one of those some day. Infiniti paved the way for a look unique in it's time and continues to raise the bar. My wife found the car during a conference she was attending after looking several months in a 200 mile radius of our town. The owner let her drive it home! I about....in my pants when she pulled up. This 2003 FX beryllium exterior and brick interior is a unique find and came with the 21 inch wheels. This model is a show car with the first years priced new in the high 20's to low 30's. Look today at the FX sticker. Gas mileage could better 18 city-21 highway. We are the 2nd owner, with the first from Atlanta. It had 19k miles when we bought it in 2005. Our children always wanted to drive it to their high school proms. The AWD is awesome in the snow with the high profile wheels. Would love to upgrade the audio system, but may need to keep it OEM for resale value. This six cylinder, multiport valve engine will scream. Just think if it was turbo-charged though it feels like it is when you decide to take command. Resale value appears to be some of the best in its class and price range. Nissan's luxury/sports cars still impress! I drove two Z cars in the late 70's and keeps getting better! Buy and enjoy!
