exceptional SUV

Just got a 2014 CX-5 Grand Touring. An amazing vehicle, very competent on the road, great visibility, comfortable, with a stellar complement of options. No disappointment in this vehicle at all. Mazda is certainly on the rise with this vehicle and the new 6.

Some Regrets

In retrospect I wish I would have looked at some other cars and gone over this one more closely. I probably could have gotten a better deal form another dealer, but they are pretty popular now. The mileage is pretty good and driving by myself is fine, but if you have adults with you in the backseat it is awkward for them to get in and out. I wish Mazda would have taken away a little bit of the cargo area to make the back seat area better. Some of the interior plastics feel a little cheap too. Maybe it helps make the car lighter to get the better gas mileage.

2014 CX5

I traded in my 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe for the new CX5, biggest mistake I made in a long time. Traded it in for better mpg but my 24 hours of owning it was not worth it. The ride home, 2 hours was a little rough and way too much wind noise, but my biggest problem was the seats. Everyone writes about how comfortable the seating is, but for me it was horrible. No matter how many positions I tried with the electric seats and the lumber support, I could not get comfortable. Around half hour into my trip, I had bad pain that ran from my butt to down by my knee, on the side. It got to be terrible where I had to get out and stand up. The seats also do not go back very far. I knew I made a mistake and drove back to Vegas the next day and traded it in for another 2013 Santa Fe. The ride to Vegas was the same, noise from the wind and loads of pain on my side. The CX5 really does not have much space to put things, even small storage in armrest and on the doors the way the storage is set up is pretty stupid, you can't even fit a little folder with your insurance card and reg. in it. Maybe I was just spoiled by the Santa Fe, even the layout on the dash is so much nicer. If you really want to try a roomy, very comfortable, very quiet cuv that rides like a Lexus, check out the 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe Turbo. I took a beating on the two trade-ins, but it was well worth it to get back to a much better vehicle. For me, the CX5 did not belong in the same room as the Santa Fe, My Bad.

Very good SUV

I found the Mazda CX5 to be an all around great car. The pickup with the new 2.5 engine is more than sufficient. It handles well. Rides smooth and the cabin is quiet. I am very happy with my decision to purchase a Mazda CX5.

Great crossover, best for the money

As my nickname says, I am a former Miata (1997) and MX-5 (2007 PRHT) owner, so when I decided to make the jump to a crossover, Mazda was the natural choice. However, just to be fair, I also test drove the CRV, RAV4, Santa Fe and Tucson after I test drove the 2013 CX5. I was dismayed at the lackluster performance of the 2.0 liter engine especially after driving the other crossovers, but the CX5 handled so well that it was a hard decision. Until I drove the 2014 with the 2.5L engine, and the choice was simple. None of the other crossovers in my price range could compare. Great power, excellent mileage, Mazda's legendary handling and feeling of control. The added safety features are a plus, especially the Blind Spot Monitor and backup camera. Seats are a bit firm, but easily adjustable (driver seat in my Touring is a power seat), including the ability to raise or lower the seat in addition to the usual controls - and an adjustable lumbar support as well. I have 2 children (4 and 6 years old) who use car seats (standard front-facing for 4 year old, high-back booster for 6 year old), and they attach easily and securely. Since the cabin isn't as roomy as larger SUVs, getting the kids in and out isn't as easy as it could be, but better than the MX-5. Good brake feel, although the brake and gas pedals are a bit close together. Center console is a little low, but everything is in reach. Touch-screen radio with backup camera is nice, and has Bluetooth for audio streaming and handsfree phone use. Even connects to Pandora, allowing more control over music than via Bluetooth alone. I didn't get the navigation, since my phone already has it, so I can't comment on it. Nice styling, which is better than I can say for the new CRV and RAV4, which are about as bland as can be. 40:20:40 rear seats allow multiple options for expanding rear cargo room, which is already pretty decent for a compact crossover. Overall a great crossover, and well worth considering for the best combination of gas mileage and performance. I get around 26 MPG with mostly city driving, and 32 on the highway. But Mazda is not just about miles-per-gallon, but "smiles-per-gallon", and the CX5 delivers!

I traded my MX-5 for a CX-5!

My MX-5 was a 2008 Grand touring and I loved it! I swore that I would NEVER get rid of it! I had it for over four years in Phoenix but then we moved back to Salt Lake City. A very light rear wheel drive roadster just doesn't do well in snow so I researched all available SUV's and crossovers. I liked the looks and specs of the 2013 CX-5 except I was leery of the 2.0 engine. I was reading that it was a bit weak, so I decided to see for myself and went over to the local Mazda dealer here in Murray, Utah. As I told them of my concerns, the salesman told me that it was of no concern anymore! They just got some 2014's in and I need to test drive one because they all (except the Sport) have the new 2.5 Skyactive engine. One drive and I was convinced! This crossover is as much or more fun to drive then my Miata! Five days later I now have my own 2014 CX-5 Grand Touring. This is the best upgrade ever. This engine plus the 6-speed auto is a perfect combo for sports cars like handling in a small crossover! If you are considering one, get the Grand Touring loaded. You will be glad you did! This Mazda goes zoom zoom zoom! I love this car!

Below expectations

I thought Mazdas were suppose to zoom zoom. This thing is the slowest tu&^d I have ever driven. I know the whole point of it is efficiency but come on. If I could take this suspension and put it in a highland sport it might be the most fun suv to drive. We choose this because we thought it was the best looking CUV and both car seats fit in the back ( I'm 6'4" and my 2 year old can sit behind me in his full size car seat, yes he kicks the nice leather) Other reviews mention loud tires. We got the grand touring and I don't really have any problems with the noise. If you have ever driven a honda crv this sounds and accelerates kind of like that just better handling. the transmission is also annoying as heck in traffic. But for a great looking fuel efficient car that can fit our little ones and is very comfortable with a sharp interior we couldn't find any better options for around 30k. If i could have afforded the Buick Enclave I probably would have gotten that.
